Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi

I have 6 black neons and 6 rummynoses in my vision 180 planted tank. The dummies always shoal but the neons are kinda scattered.

Any thoughts on why this is?

Other tank mates
1 small angel
4 macmasteri (young)
2 bristle nose (young)
4 guppies, the kids just love them

Hmmm I think I'm kinda full as I am. Will the macmasteri whip them into shape when they grow a bit or are they a bit friendly for that?

Ah was only jokin with ye anyways :)
I don't think the macmasteris will bother them tbh but if the neons are comfortable and feel safe they will each go their own way, especially with only 6 in the tank.... thats my experience with them anyway. Pity their not shoalin for ye because it looks great and the blacks are the nicest of all neons.

If the black neons dont feel safe they wont shoal just hide.
I would say you need at least 10 or more even 20 and they will shoal together.
Angel fish will make short work of the neons when he is big this could also be a reason why they are shy.'Bot the angel and get more neons ;-)

They become comfortable after a while, shoaling is specifically for security and safety, if you put a nice bugger but totally safe Fish in their Tank, they will shoal, I am sure the guys here will chip in with suggestions on the type to choose.

If you want neons (any flavour) to shoal, get a pirahna or RTC or similar.

Thx for the info guys I guess if it means they are feeling secure it is not a bad thing.

Maybe if I find a home for my kinda bedraggled angel I'll get some more neons.

Redtail catfish.... I wouldn't recommend it because you seem to value the fish you currently have but I think murph was messin when he said "any flavour" . Piranha will pick them off too.
You need, as homer more/less said, something that'll chase them but do no harm. Ye just won't get much of a shoal from 6 neons so I'd suggest gettin another at least 6 so you can see them bunched together.

Hmmm so to summarise, I need a large but not too large for 180L tank fish that will show some aggression but not do any harm.

Time to do some more googling
