Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

There still appears to be an issue with image posting ongoing.

Try below's suggestion or - if all else fails there's plan 'b' there.

Totally different to the red belly's already. While the reds scatter to the back of the tank, this guy comes to the front to check you out

Thanks Fei, I heard it was going to be an inch a year so prepared for a slow grower but would be very happy with 8cm!

not just bloodworm, put some big tail gold fish(not small one, he will kill small one) with him,let him keep eating the tail or fin from other fish. he will grow fast.

Fei I think thats highly irresponsible fishkeeping to be honest to be advising to put live goldfish in with it so that it can be nipped, bullied and eaten, particularly when there are so many alternative foods for this fish to live on. Im surprised you've even suggested it.

Not sure I like the idea of feeding live goldfish to Piranha, and its a grey area legally.

I know ski is a responsible Fishkeeper and would never feed live fish to his piranha.

Fei, can you clarify what you meant here? Surely I'm misinterpreting your post and your not suggesting to add live large tailed goldfish as bait and prey with smaller goldfish just being too quick and easy to kill? This would be downright cruel in my opinion as fishtanks are effectively closed systems with nowhere to go unlike nature so I'm sure you meant something else? Thanks.

Yeah I've never fed any live fish to my piranha and they've gotten on just fine. A mix of bloodworms, pellets and prawns has always done the job and fish look really healthy.

I wouldn't like to be introducing new fish anyway on the chance of bringing something into the tank.

"Dennis" is getting on great anyway :)

i have never had anything like a piranha and wouldn't really have an interest in that size of fish .. however is sometimes feeding it live food not good for it stimulation wise , allowing its natural instincts to come out a little ?

It's defo a good argument Brian but I don't because I don't want to risk any parasites getting into the tank and a don't have a quarantine setup.

HI SKI, your new fish looks great, very active. now im a little confused. i bought 3 of these last week from my LFS as spotted silver dollars, but seahorse sold you this one as a piranha, mine look exactly the same as your one, id say about the same age and size too. either ive bought 3 piranha i dont want or seahorse sold you a silver dollar. maybe some of the other lads here can tell them apart.

Hi Paul, I have some silver dollars too. They are a bit similar alright but the dollars are more round and the piranha has a more pointed head with protruding jaw. Can you post a pic for a look?

Ski, next time your up in dublin its well worth your time to visit aquatic village and see Ian's tank of adult red bellied piranha, he has over 35 in the tank and its amazing to look at, he also has a black piranha that will turn into a true monster fish and he has young piranhas for sale if you ever wanted to add to your new little monster, they are much more interesting if kept in large groups. ive being looking up both juvenile piranha and silver dollars and its sooooooooo hard to tell them apart.
