Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Silver Dollars in 180L

Is 180 litres, sparsely furnished (just some bogwood, java fern and a few rocks) too small for a shoal of 6-8 silver dollars?

With any of the Pacus, tank size is never a simple x times y affair due to their behaviour and high demand for very regular water changes.

If water changes and feeding are as they should be for the fish (which = high feed rate and high rate of water changes) then 180 litres would be fine for a small group until the size of each fish makes it obvious that something is a little too crowded.

The silver dollars are the smallest Pacu, and so do not demand as much as the larger Pacu (such as red hook pacu).

Often, having pacu is too large a tank can actually be detrimental to their health if they can gain enough speed to wack themselves off the side of the tank in frequent skittish dashes.
Hence, me thinking 180 litres would be fine for a small group.

I was thinking of the Metynnus argenteus. If I got a few of them, would I still be looking at moving them on when they're fully grown? I'm not a big fan of acquiring fish knowing I'll be getting rid of them

id say 180l is the min you will need for a group of 6 SD, they are very active fish that never stay still. from my experience they dont like to feed of the substrate so may i suggest that you also keep a few loaches that will do a great job on keeping any left over food from the substrate and they are wonderful fish to keep. clown and yoyo loaches are 2 of my fav but there are many available in most lfs. one other thing about them is you may kiss your java fern good bye as the SD will destroy/eat every live plant you ever put in a tank. if you could push to a 4ft 400l tank then you can have a wonderful set up including 6 to 8 adult SD.

Even java fern? I was always led to believe that that and bolbitis were the only plants they wouldn't eat on account of the fact they taste horrible

i also believed the same so i bought java fern and anubis from a member here, all big healthy plants but within a month there was nothing left only bits of floating plant parts in the tank. i have 3 adults and 3 juveniles spotted SD so ive given up on ever having a planted tank with them. if you want to try plants in your tank i suggest you get them either free or for very little money so you wont feel so bad if you payed out big money for shop bought plants and watch them torn apart by the SD but you gotta love them
