Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Stocking advice needed please

Hi!
I'm looking for some schooling fish for my project. ( www.irishfishkeepers.com/index.php/forum...gumi-qnew-beginningq )
I was looking online for something and I came up
with 2 options

1. Rummy Nose Tetras
I have about 25 of them in my temporary tank and I like them but I don't know if
I would love them in my project. If so - I might add another 25 to have them
in good sized squad

2. Danio Margaritatus – Galaxy Rasbora - I came across these ones and I found
them very attractive. Has anyone any experience with these?

If so would be there any retailers available to order them and if yes - what would be the price?
I would bee looking for around 30 of them

3. Any other suggestions? (except neons, h.rasboras)

I am planted!

Hiya Lauris,
Well done on the other thread, Im enjoying it alot.
So in terms of what fish you have available and are looking to add to that tank I think that the rummy nose tetras may not work in the way you may desire, personally I certainly would not have 50 of them in a 125 litre tank. The rummys are lovely fish and and colourful, however they are quite fast fish and tend to require abit of swimming room.
The Galaxy rasbora is a lovely fish, and once coloured up they are great. Ive found however that they dont tend to school or shoal as tightly as the rummys, they are skittish and do often group together however I wouldnt necessarily call it schooling as such. In terms of cost, I cant imagine they are anymore than about 2.50 or 3 euro at most Id say per fish.If you were buying more, then Im sure the shop would do a bulk discount surely. You will certainly be able to add more of the galaxys than the rummys to your tank, as they remain alot smaller. They are often used in nano tanks also and will very much appreciate the planted set up of your tank.

Other options that you may consider however are the ember tetra. This is a very under rated fish in my opinion, its a lovely colour and schools nicely from my experience with them. They are also quite a small fish so you will be able to add a nice size shoal of them to that tank. Perhaps another fish you might want to consider is the pygmy cory. The pygmy can add alot of activity to the tank, they are constanly roaming around the tank like little bullets and generally seems to cover alot of different areas of the tank. They would be great for your plants also keeping them nicely clean!

Whatever your choice, remember you dont need to have massive numbers of them and the image of schooling fish up and down the tank wont always be the case when placed in a fish tank with bounderaries, many schooling fish often go into groups and school. However given the way your tank is going at present, Im willing to say any fish that goes into it is going to look great.

Gavin! Thank you!
I do love such a detailed advice! Much appreciated!
This is something worth to think about! I'm still have
my mind on Galaxy rasboras as they have a great colour
and it will pop out on my setup surely. Cory might be an
option to keep in small group if I will decide to keep
more than 1 type of fishes in. I would like to have more
shrimps as they are great cleaners as well ..
It is not easy to choose as this was always an issue for
me and my previous community project was seriously
overcrowded with lots of different species..

This is always a tricky one. Trying to find the ideal fish for a set up.
Danio Margaritatus will not go well in this tank. They don't like the big open spaces a may spend all there time in and around the rock cave in the tank.

Diamond head neons can look great. So can some of the smaller rainbow fish.
You may also look at some of the shiners.
Black neons are another option. They spend a lot of time mid water.
