Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys I just got a new tank wich is 45×28×30 cm .
I was planning to stock it with dwarf corydoras but I was lioking at fishes online and I saw a peacock goby.
I couldnt believe the colours on this fish and after further research I looks like i could keep a pair in my tank.
So my question is does anyone keep these in their tanks and do they have an interesting behaviour ?
Thanks
Anthony

Anthony,
Here is an article written a while back by platty and it gives his experiences with the Gobies

www.irishfishkeepers.com/index.php/artic...eurndina-ocellicauda

For myself I have kept them quite a few times down the years and have found them to be a pretty and reasonably innocuous species - although the male can become quite aggressive when protecting his eggs. Whenever they have bred for me my observation has always been that - although very defensive of his eggs the male seems to 'lose interest' once the fry are free-swimming. Having said that though, they were never eaten by him either.

Hope this helps.

John

They're pretty accommodating when it comes to water, I found - but no so tolerant of ANY ammonia or nitrites, so a good eye would need to be kept on that, if water quality isn't perfect they quickly go into decline.
I think that, in the wild, they live in quite soft acid conditions but I'm sure they will thrive given your parameters.
I have seen them appear on quite a lot of Sponsors' lists - although I wouldn't be able to say when it comes to Cork.
Des in Maxi-Zoo had some and, I think, will be getting more as and when they become available. I think they have a store in your part of the world which also sells fish, it might be worth enquiring there?
Sorry I couldn't be more positive, perhaps someone could make better suggestions about sourcing them.
John

edit - according to the list of Sponsors (above and slightly to the right of centre) there are three stores in and around Cork, they might be worth a ring?

He's a sound man, if they're on the list - he'll get them alright.

They are pretty sedentary fish so wouldn't be tearing around, I would suspect there would be no problem in keeping one in a small tank - perhaps anyone with experience of both the fish and/or the little tanks would care to add their opinions?
