Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Anyone got much experience of them?
Ive just gotten a pair and they have been spawning away together in the past.
I have thoughts of breeding them, but not sure! Ive been told Id need a 50 Gallon tank for these to breed in on their own.
Is that not a bit excessive for just 1 pair of fish?
How agressive will they get when they start spawning? Should they be kept seperate or will they be ok?
I dont want anything else killed, Ive got some nice fish that I would be upset if i lost!!!

Also If Im not moving them to an alternative tank, Ill have to reconsider my cray fish if i want any successful breeding going on

Whats your thoughts?

Hammie,
The Herotilapia multispinosa (which I suspect you have) are reasonably peaceful (compared with some of their larger Central American cousins) but, as usual, it's very hard to set down hard and fast rules.
The ones I've kept in the past were invariably housed in with larger Cichlids so were kept 'in their place' as a result.
You haven't said which other fish they are in with - it might be good for others to be able to assess the potential dangers.
But...at the end of the day they are Cichlids and - like most others - can become very protective of their eggs and young.
I wouldn't say a 50-gallon tank would be a necessity, would be nice, but even one of 15 gallons would be OK - I've kept and bred a pair in a 24" tank before now.
What can happen with Cichlids breeding in smaller tanks is that one of the parents becomes more dominant than the other (often the female, but not exclusively so) and if this proved to be the case the other would need to be removed for their own safety.
Let us know how you get on - a 'blow-by-blow' account would be nice.

Thanks John
I was thinking that size of tank might suit them well enough!!! Have a tank there that I should be able to use, Just have to pick up filter and a few bits before I proceed.

Once I start the process Ill set up a blog style thread just documenting whats happening and how we are progressing
