Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Whitespot or not? was created by amp2000 (amp2000)
Hi All

I have a blue ram cichlid with what looks like whitespot. The fish has whitespots around the eyes, I've treated the last 3 days with esha exit & the fish looks to be getting worse.
From what I've read, whitespot spreads quickly. The fish has probably had it over a week now, probably 2 weeks. The thing that has me confused though is, all the other fish are fine, 11 neon tetras, 5 cory catfish, 1 guppy & 4 platys & another 4 platy fry, the last fry I only noticed a few mins ago & is tiny so there is probably more.

Also, just tested my ph, it's 8.1, I lost the other blue ram cichlid about a month ago, he had teh same problem, whitespots on his head that just kept multiplying so I put it out of it's misery as I couldn't get medication.

I'm thinking it's not whitespot but the fish doesn't like that high ph, Any suggestions?

Would RO water help me out maybe? I really like the blue rams so would like to be able to keep 2 in the tank.

Also, the brother in law has a 240 litre tank, I'm thinking of transferring the 4 platys to his tank, he doesn't want them but I reckon his kids will  Would I be safe to do so or should I hold off, I don't want to infect his fish.

If it is white-spot, and it seems like it is, your freebies could introduce whitespot and he wont thank you for it, secondly, your PH is off the scale where Rams are concerned and may be why it is they that are suffering.

The normal route is High temps to speed up the life cycle exposing the White-spot organism to the EXIT but corys would most definitely NOT appreciate the change in temps, I would attempt to isolate the Rams and treat them separately if that is an option.

Cheers for the reply Kev, the tank I got off you would be my hospital tank but I moved to a new place last monday & don't have room for it so unfortunately it's in storage. I'm thinking just get rid of the blue ram now, the fish have been stressed out enough this week, I had to break down the tank on monday, remove everything & transfer all fish to a bucket, load into van etc etc
The fish spent about 2 hours in the bucket/bin & probably about 1 hour without the filter & heater working. I managed to keep only about 25litres of the original water.

I really don't know what options I have other than getting rid of the ram, all of the other 20 odd fish seem fine...I've also just noticed the ram is flicking off a rock now & again.

I wish I could help, you need an offer from some magnanamous Forum member to hold your Fish etc until you get sorted, honestly, I would if I could.

Should the esha exit be doing it's job already? I dosed it on tuesday with my brother in laws expired 2012 esha exit, on wed I bought some fresh stuff & dosed with that wed & thur. Do you reckon I should add a 4th dose now or do you reckon the 2012 esha was ok on tue. It says dose for 3 days but I'm not sure day 1 was a waste or not.
I know you can't give a definitive answer but I'd appreciate your input, I'm still a newb...

EDIT: Also, why are the other fish not showing signs of it?

If the Exit was out of the way of Light, it should be ok but I couldn't guarantee it, the reason the others might not yet be showing signs could be because the ph isn't affecting them the same way the Ram is being affected, your ph is way off the scale and more in keeping with African Rift Cichlids where a Ram should be neutral or better still, on the soft and Acid side. You may have caught the disease in it's swimming phase before the swimmers made it to your good, healthy Fish.

Cheers Kev, I've got rid of the blue ram, I hate doing it but I'd little choice, I don't want to kill all the other fish, like you said my PH is off the scale for it so I wasn't doing it any favours.

Any of them African Rift Cichlids suitable for a 120litre? It's a pair of something I'm looking for, I'm going to let the tank stabilise for a few weeks before I get anything though...
