Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'm interested in a fire eel and am looking for feed back from any one who has owned or owns them.

If I get one it will be housed with bala's, gold Severum, Cory's, Bn Plecos, red tail sharks and maybe angles will I have any problems here with these?

I no they grow 2 foot but it will be going in a four foot tank it will do for the time being. Has anyone kept one with these types of fish!?

Hi joe. The fire and tyre track ells are not ells but long tropical fish from asia. They will hunt at night so id be little concerned about your corys and red tail shark. Once fire ells reach 12inchs they get aggressive to eachother. Mine ate cat fish pellets and prawn. Sadly it ended up in a fx5 filter when the inlet filter head came off.

If you fancy that shape of fish in your tank but dont want a large predator why not look into the african rope/reed fish. They stay peaceful and can be kept in groups, they even play together like watching live rope plating. May even be little cheaper than fire ells.

Hi james, I know your main interest is breeding quality fish, my thoughts are to keep any other fish out of your tank that will upset any breeding pairs you have. Keep a few kuhli loachs if you like. You wont ever see them. They work away under the substrate keeping it clean.

There are a good few species (around 90) of "fire eel"/"Spiny Eel"/"Tyre Track" from Africa and Asia.

I think a better common name for them is Mastacembelid eels to be honest to avoid confusion unless going by specific names.

They can be slow growing, and some species can be a problem to fed when young, and sizes vary quite a bit.

Biggest problem I find is young ones in a mixed tank not getting to the food they like (especially where you have a spcies that will not accept anything less than frozen food as a youngster) AND (as one said above) finding their way into filters !!

So......make sure the "eels" are getting enough food.

I have never experienced any problems with them hassling cories or even reasonable sized tetras.

Mixing with Malawis?.....I would only go for flocks from the African Rift Lakes (eg Mastacembelus shiranus).

Thanks for the info Ian I might stay away from them for a while. Maybe set up a tank for one to live alone some time in the future I'll see what happens.

Last ting I need is to starve it to death due to my greedy fish.
