Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I agree Alan I think prices even over the last 2 years have gone through the roof don't get me wrong there is places that sell certain types of fish for ok prices.

My recolection is that fish prices depend on the time of year and weather and how cold it is ect

I was in a place last week selling normal Burundi frontosa for 35 euro and they were about the size of a German blue ram.

I am only back in the hobbie a year from a break for a good few years and I have 100% noticed the high price of fish.

When I first got back into keeping fish I wanted to keep discus but was turned off by the high price.

But in general prices are high certain shops can charge what they want because they know people will pay it.

Just my 2 cents

Regards
Craig

at the end of the day it becomes nite

i have too agree with you guys for some fish like neons ect. but the more specialised fish can have reasons for the high price like wilds going up in price because fishermen see there getting popular ect. i was looking into buying whole sale discus from malaysia and there were 2inch ones for 5 dollar but after freight costs and packageing and handeling the price multiplied and that wasnt even them being sent to ireland, i would have to collect them from the uk, so sometimes its out of the lfs control on the retail price. but i have noticed some being sold with high prices that would have any reason to be so high

I was always told the biggest problem with the cost of koi was the fact that no only do you have the import cost of the koi but as fishkeeper will know fish need water the second most heavy liquid known to man, this is where the cost is , fish are flown in and fuel and landing charges have spirited in resent years .it's also a question of value for money ,do you buy a poor quality cheap fish or a stunning quality koi that cost more . I know which I go for.

Yeah some shops are overcharging for very poor quality fish!
And some are bringing get in some very well bred specimens

I don't mind paying for good quality fish but I will be ****ed if I'll be overcharged for bad quality! Yes prices are high, but the sterling will have a huge effect on that!

If we are to see the prices fall again we need to have the price of sterling dropped again imo

I know it's nice to go for a wander around a shop for a look but generally you'll always get a better deal from a breeder.
Maybe if there was a section or a topic on the forum here that we could list what we're breeding at the time or intending to breed it might help people that are looking for particular fish

A few observations...
I, too, have noticed that fish prices haven't exactly been dropping in recent times.
However the points which are made earlier are very significant. Air freight cots are in the upward direction - and this has always been a significant part of the outlay for the shop owners, likewise rent and rates plus electricity costs too. Then the cost of employing staff has to be taken into account..................
As Hammie points out there is also the effect of the weak euro against most of the other major currencies, most Fish prices are either in Dollars or Sterling so the poor exchange rate has also to be borne in mind.
All of these factors - unfortunately - conspire against both the retailer, and by association, to us - the buyers.

Still, we are assured that good times are 'just around the corner' here, so perhaps the much heralded 'recovery' will see prices dropping a little?

And, as to the breeders' lists
this has been tried on several occasions down the years but has always failed - it was hoped that, when it was established, the Member Profile category would encompass who was keeping what fish, and who was breeding what but, as with previous attempts this just hasn't really taken off.
However, the category is still there, so if anyone would like to update their profile with details of Fish being bred then please feel free to do so.
