Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey guys

Decided not to roll with the wild caught minnows plan. Have let the tank run for 4 months without fish. Just bought a few larger tetra today. I believe there some sort of red eye tetra but seem longer than photos online so maybe you can help ID them.

Will begin planting the tank in a few weeks. Maybe get some corydoras. Have 2 internal filters running a fluval and the original bioflow in this rekord 800. Plenty of wood and good surfact agitation. Feedback and future ideas would be nice. Im a bit clueless as too how I should plant

Im just wondering if you ran that tank for 4 months with no fish in it how did you keep your good filter bacteria alive?

If the filters werent receiving a constant Ammonia source to keep them cycled all that time prepare for an Ammonia explosion and possibly a tank full of dead fish literally overnight.....

Ah potential nightmare.

I had the water tested in maxi zoo and explained what I had done and ammonia was 0 nitrates were 0 so I just presumed it was ready to be stocked.

Ill do a 25% water change. I have some polyfilter in there. Hopefully that keeps it down till I get home from work with some live bacteria...any idea where I will pick it up in dublin city centre

You will probably need to do more than 25%.....If there is any ammonia in there at all I suggest 75%

What people dont realise is that even small amounts of ammonia burn the gills of fish and cause respiration problems...The result is either illness or death from the stress....

BTW your Tetras look very much like one of the African species of Tetra....

Alestes Longipinnisis

If they are they are rare fish! You definitely dont see them too often....

Where did you get them?

So I got the api test kit there.

Ammonia is what I think is 0ppm but it has a green tint to it depending on the lighting suggesting .25. Its strange but my eye tells me its yellow. Has anyone else has this issue with the ammonia test

Nitrite is bang on 0

Nitrate has gone from 0 yesterday to 5.0 today

That means the tank is cycled at present?

Its only cycled if the Ammonia remains at zero constantly and NitrIte remains at zero constantly....

Time will only tell.....

Test daily for the next week or so (maybe longer) and if you see any increase in Ammonia or NitrIte your tank is NOT cycled...

Feed sparingly during this period and DO NOT add anymore fish!
