Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Declan Lally taught me most of what I knew fresh water wise in th early 1980 during school break at presentation college, he joined the ITFS in or around the same time as Derek Doyle, and set up the Bray Tropical Fish Society, if this was around today, it would be pirate fish club and illegal;) as it would not be in the Federation:laugh::P

Any way to cut a long story short Declan only keeps goldfish in the staff room (behind the can-tine in Presentation College Bray. He would get back into fish keeper if he could get Half beaks!!!!!!!!, and a a small tank, my pro proposal is for the ITFS to donate a small tank and half beaks to get him back in, you ask why cant he go out and get his own? well I would rather not say on line, Derek Doyle will understand what I mean, I also think if any one lives in Bray and attends the ITFS they could give him a lift or invite him to the next fish show as he does not have wheels or a phone. (He use to organize shows in the 80´s including one of the biggest open show ever Presentation College.) He can be contacted by asking for him at the canteen at or around 12.45-1PM at the school.

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

Hi derek,
I visit him at his work place the morning before last February's ITFS meeting, I forgot to ask him for telephone number, if you click on pres bray website (right of half beaks photo you will get his work number, or failing that can some one visit him at work during his lunch hour, I would do it if I was over in Ireland, but her in doors is expecting a third gremlin this year so I doubt I will be over till 2009, does any one live near Bray:kiss:

Just to but this guy in perspective, this guy was keeping Tropicals 5 years before I started, I joined the ITFS after he got me hooked, followed by Derek, and Brian.

Dec started to then attend the ITFS in Ballsbridge, but did not have wheels, he set up the Bray Fish Society, and held 2 or more show, one of the he arrange was the biggest ever open show in Ireland, in Pres Bray, and loads of Guys from the north especially Bangor stayed as guest in ITFS membres houses, there was even a marine tank on display, and some ify unnaturally colorful Discus.

Any way this Man could be a goldmine to the ITFS if we could get him back based on his track record.

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

Sean,

Some day in the next few days, I'll head down to the Pres school at lunch time, it's only around the corner from my work and home in Bray.

I'll give him a lift to ITFS meetings if I am going

Thanks Darragh, if you left the message with one of the girls in the canteen it will be passed on to him, if it was with the head master a heavy guy in his late 50s, with grey hair, with a cork or possibly country accent, he is useless and wont pass on the message. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Good glad to here that he called Derek, when he hears his name is all over an Internet site it would be hard to turn his back on our offer, Darragh I am glad the head master gave the message on, when I went up there 2 or 3 years ago he did not past the message on, as I left him he said wait are you one of the past pupils, Connolly brothers? Even though I have changed a lot in 20 years the B still remember the scam we had for backing to back 2 beta max vcrs to copy dirty B movies and sell them on to pupils there at that time.

Any way getting back to the forum, It goes to show the power the internet has with one thread can get the ball rolling, this would of not been possible 10 years ago, so credit goes to Darragh.

lb. yes he is a great fishkeeper and a good man.
Declan was heavily involved in the hobby and club and fed. scene esp. through the 80's and 90's. he is v. charismatic and had a huge influence promoting the hobby and helped a lot of people start the right way in fishkeeping, including sean.
although he has drifted out of the club scene he still is involved in fishkeeping to an extent. (coldwater)
declan was and is held in very high regard by anyone who knew or knows him.

On a totally seperate note & sorry to hijack this thread but is the guy who used to run Jebis Aquatics on Richmond Street in Dublin still around?

He was the biggest influence on me many years ago with advice etc: in the years before the internet.

I know the shop closed down years ago but just wondering if the man is still around?

Cheers,

Jebi was some character, I got my first tank from him
I heard 3rd hand that he had passed away but can't be sure.

There is alot of the very old school shops that are gone like The Trop Shop, Jebis and the place on Bride Street

Darragh,

Do you remember the tank he had under the counter with the most amazing Cardinals.

His fish were always in top condition and he bred a lot of his own fish so they were always quality fish.

The shop itself was small & narrow but I always enjoyed my visits there and I always got my fish from him.

Sad if he's passed away.

good pic. tm, thats my white car outside the shop. just messing, but thats where i used to park when i visited jebis.(jim tyrell) would'nt get away with that nowadays, worse luck.
i worked down the road in rathmines and i used to sell jim, angels guaramies tetras etc. and i had many a good debate with him. he retired a good few years ago but i never heard that he died?. he was a founder member of the itfs and life pres. i think?
he used to keep the shop door locked and would only admit those he knew or liked the look of, (no gurriers:lol: ) so he never let daragh owens in.

LoL That was just the first time :-) But sometimes he would leave you there for a while! I had not heard that he had died. As I mentioned in the November article I did meet him long after the shop closed and he was in great form, but still that was quite a few years ago now.

I recall visiting this shop in the mid 80´s it was a bit of a dive from a shop design point of view, he was a miserable old chap who appeared to not want my custom, perhaps it was because of my teenage face, but like the Aquaria (Ian) in Dun Laoigh or the Trop shop they were real specialist shops with good advice.  I remember on the same day visiting Dublin pet stores and they had a undergravel filter with white 2 cm diameter pebble as substrate (as opposed to gravel)with a turn over 5 times over the max slow swimmer can tolerate , how did they get away with it back in the 80`s. Do you remeber what Dave from the Trop shop look back in the 80`s a dead ringer of Brian Ferry.:P I hope he does not mind my comparrison it´s like some one saying some one looks like George Cloony.

It had a few steps and was a long narrow shop with tanks on the right and bird cages on the left.
