Angel fish and tetras
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all
Thinking of adding some angelfish and cardinals soon to the tank,i know big angels regard small tetras as breakfast, but if i were to add the angels as young ie;small fish,do you think they could "learn " to live with the tetras or would instinct take over when their mouths got big enough...?
what do people think...?
Thanks in advance
Lar

Lar,
I have had a similar senario myself recently. I posed this questions recently and received the following.
www.irishfishkeepers.com/cms/component/o...ew/catid,5/id,41369/
Indeed I have since purchased 2 angels, relatively small still however one does seem more aggressive at feeding time but not to the point of doing any damage to the neons, his mouth is too small anyhow. I guess angels are abit like dogs in one sense, they can be harmless but the potential is always there for them to bite. Angels can be harmless also but again the potential is there for them to bite the neons too! Ive introduced the angels at a young age in a bid to see if they will settle with the other South American tetras and to date Ive had no problems. Get the angels young and they will be fine. Also if you are introducing the angels,I found having a few places for them to shelter and hide in early on was useful.

I tried this years ago and this is how it went bought 20 large neons and 6 tiny angels, the idea being that if the angels associated the neons as being too big to eat as they matured this association would survive and harmony would be ensured:huh: well for a while it did last the angels got to about 4inches had only lost 3/4 neons through natural causes ( i did find the bodies) then i made my mistake i replaced the neons i lost, the angels had associated everything that came in through the top of the tank to be food, bang go my six new neons and then over the next week or so neons where dropping daily angels where getting fatter and i learned an invaluable lesson, you can fool nature for only so long and when nature kicks in you get overweight extremely well fed angels:blush:
hope this helps:blink:

I had 2 angle's in my main tank and last sunday i put 6 rummy noses in, they only lasted an hour, lesson learned and the angles now live in my Q tank as they were starting to gang up on my cardinals which have been in the tank for months. New home required for the Angles if anybody is interested, about 3"

Well Lads
I've gone and done the bold thing, 2 small Angel's went in today along with a gang of the biggest cardinals I've ever seen (got them in AV today, fab looking fish !),currently the cardinals are the same lenght as the angels,so I'll have to just wait and see what happens.
