Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Any suggestions for a small snail eating fish that wont uproot plants or eat shrimp.
Heard dwarf chain loach are great but cant find any around! All other loach I reckon will uproot palnts or eat shrimp. Dwarf puffers not an option either, as they will have a go at the shrimp.
Any ideas please ????
Dave.

Yeah, but then are you just going to be overrun by another snail ???
You will not be overrun with Assassin snails, they do not reproduce in any great numbers at all, that's why the high price. They only lay a few eggs at a time and they take about a month to hatch, aftr three months they are still the size of a pin head or so I have read, I have some for about 6 months and have not seen any babies. There is always a but, what type of snail are you trying to get rid of as I have only seen assassins eating MTS, they don't seem interested in ramshorn or pond snails, at least not in my tanks. They did kill two huge apple snails though

Peter, I dont want snails because I think they are unsightly (I know they do no harm). As for the Clown Loach...they wreck plants:angry: (HC/Hairgrass)
Daragh,Im dont have a clue about what type of snails I have, but all I can say is they are small and were introduced on plants and they are reproducing rapidly and loads of eggs all over tank.
Maybe I will try Assassin as you say they dont reproduce quick.
Nobody seen Dwarf Chain Looch????? This would be my first choice.
Thanks again, Dave.

Those little small snails will not be eaten by the assassins, at least mine don't eat them. The ones they done eat are MTS or Malaysian Trumpet Snails which look like an ice cream cone and grow to about 1 inch.
I don't recall seeing Dwarf Chain loaches here for a long time, they are quite pricey fish too. I got three some time ago in the UK on the way back from Hayling Island, but I don't have them any more. Lovely ever active little fish.

There is a good chance they would burrow under the carpet of plants.
I have large adult kuhli loaches and unfortunately they wont eat my snails.
You could make a snail trap and slowly get rid of them.
Get a suction cup and tread a cable tie though it to make a hoop. In the hoop use a small plastic dish, the lid of a fish food container will do.
Place the suction cup with dish up near the top of the tank. Every night put some food like a piece of a pleco wafer in the dish. The following morning remove empty the dish (leave the suction cup) which should contain snails.
This is a slow way of removing snails but it is another option.

my trumpet snail pop is dwindling and iv noticed a decline in assasins. so if u want to increase ur assasin snail population id advice trying to breed trumpet snails for a constant food source!
I think they eat 1 snail every day...so if u have 3 pop in 3 a day or 18 a week ect.. and i think they lay one egg every 10 days if conditions are right.
i also put in a bit a fish and they crawl all over it... im not to sure if this can be substituted for snails..but its prob good to give both
hope this is of some help,.
