Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Nervous Silver Dollars

Hi Guys,

Long time, no visit, been busy and hadn't a lot of time to look around here.
My tank, a Juwel 120Ltr finally established itself after a very dodgy start, but now I have 1 x Large Sucker, 3 x Large Silver Dollars, 2 x Neons, 2 x Black Neons, 1 x Lightening Tetra, 2 x Pristella Tetras, 2 x Clown Loaches, 5 x Female Platys, two of which gave birth to over 100 fry nearly 2 weeks ago, unfortunately the 2 x Male Platys, didn't survive after "doing the business". I'm now down to 26 fry, who seem to be doing well now, but today I noticed that my 3 Dollars have a bad case of White Spot. They have always been very nervous, hiding for most of the day, only coming out to be fed or when the lights go out. The water reading seem to be fine, the only change recently has been has been the baby brine shrimp for the fry who are in a breeder tank.
My question is as follows: Is it safe to put white spot treatment into my tank with the fry?
Thanking you in advance.
Eddie

Silver dollars get spooked very easily, just turning on the tank lights can send them into a frenzy which can lead to serious injuries.

Your tank is simply too small for silver dollars, they need loads of room. I reckon the stress of such a small environment is a major contributing factor to the whitespot.

I don't think the whitespot treatment will harm the fry, but i'm willing to be corrected on that.

Hope the whitespot clears up for you, good luck.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

It would be the clown loaches I would be more worried about with the whitespot treatment.
I think esha exit is good for young and sensitive fish.

Just a few questions to help get to the root cause of the white spot. , how long/often do you leave the lights on? Whats your maintenance schedule? Is the tank in a busy/noisy room? Do you use any chemicals in the tank? And do you know your PH and hardness?

Agree tank is definitely too small for dollars.

I've experienced caring for 20-30 silver dollars, 5-10 red hooks as tankmates for my arowanas and they are skittish with other aggressive fish and will come infront to beg for food when they get used to the tank surroundings and outside the tank - mature SDs are better and easier to take care of - but some big SDs can cause havok to less aggressive fish. They are quite hardy - I remember I had a 4in swallowed by my RTC and I virtually had to remove it manually but survived all the bruises and loss scales. They have almost scale less features but would still do fine with malachite green anti-ich meds. having placed decors like bogwood have also kept them more confident compared to bare tanks.

Fishkeeping CV: Co-founded, 1st President of the only surviving Fishkeeping Club (Accredited by Dept. of Fisheries) in the Philippines (mypalhs.com). I have mostly reared tropicals - Arowanas and monster fishes. My oldest arowana is 13years old (died in a tropical storm). Ive since reared a Black,...

Thank you guys for all the comments.
Yes, I also think that the dollars have become too big for the tank, I have considered bringing them back to the shop, but now with the white spot, that's out of the question. My loaches have now caught the white spot too, so I am going to continue with the treatment, must check out the esha though, thanks for that. Maintenance is regular enough, weekly/monthly filter changes, 2/3 weekly water changes, artificial plants, temp is at a constant 26 degrees, I can't get it any higher, no water herdness, PH is fine. I'll have to take it day by day I think.
Eddie
BTW, nice pictures.
