Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all just an update......

My 180 has settled down finally.... moved it out of the living room to under the stairs were there is no direct sunlight at all, was having horrible problems with algea but on the upside while im sitting on my down stairs toilet i can watch my fish tank ha ha ha ha ha:ohmy:

I have 4 fry ( 3 guppy, 1 platty should have more soon ) 4 blue rams 2 pairs i think, 2 SAE, 3 mollies, dwarf gourami ( still cant get females ) 3 albino tetras, 1 neon tetra 1 black skirt tetra i think, 7 different plattys and 3 danios.

Thats it so far still looking for female dwarf gouramis, then maybe somemore blue rams and more SAE oh and about 8 rummy nose tetras in a few weeks.

Then ive got the go ahead for my dwarf puffer tank too:laugh:  :cheer: i was a good boy ha ha

Alan make sure they have some plants and bogwood etc as the rams like to have their own space, they are terrotorial but not overly aggressive to the point they only nip at one another without harm but it can stress them out, so make sure you have enough areas for them to call their own.
Also have some flat smooth rocks or perhaps an upturned flower pot, they need flat smooth surfaces for their spawning. Ideally sand substrate as they like to dig also.
As for the neon on his own,Id get another few as they prefer to be kept in numbers as part of a safety mechanism they release a chemical that keeps them tight to one another, abit like security in numbers.

Sounds like youve a nice tank going there. The SAE can get abit quick as they age, they will stress the Blue rams out if you have too many of them in the tank as the SAE can also get a wee bit aggressive but no real threat, however their constant darting around might actually prevent your rams from spawning, however with 2 I dont think its an issue, remember they can grow quite large also.(great algae cleaners though and that includes keeping the plants clean).Dwarf gourami's are usually available, keep an eye out. They are another lovely fish.
Sounds like you have plenty of great fish there, Id defo recommend the rummys also.

No worries Alan, and trust me your gonna fall for those rams, I know I did.Amazing when they are spawning also, great to watch their behaviour. Also golden rams are pretty, some dont like them but they can be v nice fish too, they get along with the blue ram and can even breed with them.

They will usually chase one another around for a day or two prior to spawning, they will also chase other fish away from the area they have chosen to spawn on (will be something smooth as a spawning site). They will also on occassions dig at the sand substrate, but again this doesnt always happen. You will be able to predict when its going to happen but often its as the evening falls. When they do spawn they will tend the eggs and chase away other fish, the first few spawns vary but often the Rams will eat the eggs themselves or let others at them after a day or so of minding them. They improve after a few spawns so its a case of practice makes perfect I guess. They will pick at the eggs themselves but thats normal as they tend the eggs. Enjoy the first spawn and then you can think about actually setting up another tank for rearing them but thats another days work (clearing it with the missus might be difficult!!). The courtship display is rather good also, puffing up their fins and glancing alongside one another. You can distinguish the difference between a male and female, the female has a pinkish belly that will be very coloured up when she is in the mood.
Here are a few pics of my ones:
Minding the eggs. These are of golden rams but same rules apply!

This pic is slighty blurred but you can see the female on the top with her pink bely.
