Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

what to stock in a small tank.....?

Not been keeping fish for a while due to space restrictions in my house. Today I arranged to meet my brother and 5 year twins out in Brittas, and they gave me a present of an Aqul El 15L Hexagon Aquarium. I figured it would be an "insult" not to use it....

The tank:

I may yet change it for a larger one, 20 litres +

So what do I stock it with? I was considering a pair of Apisto's or maybe a few shellies. Any ideas? Not a whole lot of swimming space available...

PS - the tank itself was bought in Kilkenny and not in Brittas.

Its just not suitable for an type of cichlid.I would chance keeping a few neons first just to see if it is managable. The smaller the tank the harder it is to keep good water!!

yeah I hear ya..... I'm used to keeping much bigger tanks, and never had one so small....

I have a feeling that I might end up changing it for a Rio 125.....

Would be a good breeding / fry tank if you don't have one already.

I think the RIO 125 would be a better option. You are very limited as to what you can do with a 20 litre tank. My quarantine tank is bigger than that.

Regards,

Ken.

Maybe some microrasbora galaxy and a few cherry or Amano shrimp.

If you are going to keep that tank and put some really small fish in it take this advice.
Buy a Fluval 1 of ebay for a tenner.
Cut the filter out of the lid of that tank and throw it in the bin.
Actually stand on it a few times first, just to be sure.

Aqua El is a nice little tank, I have the 10Gal one, Pearl 60 (go figure) I think its called. The inbuilt filter sucks, or rather it doesn't!

Saw the Galaxy's today out in Brittas. Lovely little fish. The last four were being sold at the time.....

Now I have it in my head to get a Rio 125 (if I can find the space). I could go with some Apisto's, Galaxy's & maybe a couple of bristle nose plecs or a couple a Calvus and some shellies......

Bear in mind that the Galaxy rasbora is tiny so there probably are very few tankmates for them.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

I wouldn't mix apistogrammas with galaxy rasboras. Expensive live food. A. borelli might be OK with them. They don't grow all that big either, however, I wouldn't fancy putting them in one tank with the larger species like A. macmasteri or A.hongsloi.
I do like the look of the galaxy rasboras. Unfortunately they are not available in the Cork region yet. I have a small tank in one of the boys' room that is pretty much empty at the moment. I'd put one of the smaller corydoras species like C. habrosus or C. pygmeus with them
