Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,
Need an id for a flat sucker type fish. They are flat and happily glide along the glass, bogwood etc. Has sucker mouth and is dark to black in colour with a speckled pattern. very lively and are uually found hanging on the glass or clinging to the bogwood.

Will try and get a picture up

I'm with Acara on this, sounds more like a hill stream loach fast flowing well aerated water required.

they may be sold as cold water plecs or Hong Kong plec this is totally wrong and misleading names.

but with out a picture

Here is a pic of the Hong Kong Plecos that I have. Gorgeous fish, great fun to watch if kept with a few of their own.

Acara/Fishowner,
This looks like him alright. Thanks for your help. Currently in a tropical setup with temp 85degrees. It is a 2' tank with a Fluval2+ which has a fairly powerful outfit. as I said he tears around the place and is a really fun fish

Should I move him to a cold water setup

You might still be having him at that temp, they prefer cooler temps, drop the temp to 22c and they will prefer it. Also get a rock for them, mine absolutely love the rock I have in my tank and are regularly competiting for it!!! Foodwise, they will pick at alot of things but like algae tablets that the usual corys, cats and all the other bottom feeding fish nibble on! Also they like high O2 content in the tank, so increase aeration if you need to. Finally be carefully when treating the tank meds etc as these fish can be sensitive to meds.
Also they are not a pleco either, actually a hillstream loach. Brill little fish, look carefully at their tail and you will see some blue on it!

Acara,
Brilliant website and love his tank design. As i said the Fluval 2 even at its low stting pumps out a lot of water so might and had it pointing to side but will now point it straight down thee tank.

any suggestions for tank mates. Currently lives with about 10 white clouds, 5 bronze corys and an apple snail who seems to love hanging on the glass right in the middle of the water stream. I'm afraid he will get blown away and cracked at the far end but he regularly does this when he is not tearing aroundd the tank eating all and sundry

Son wanted to buy three or four of these, he saw them in Pet Mania near Drogheda. Non fish guy in the shop called them butterfly or hong kong loaches, but we did not believe him:blush: Must go back and say sorry...

Nice fish, unusual.

I am planning a hillstream tank myself, was looking at powerheads, etc today. They like company of the same species generally. The wcmm will be grand, but they too like it cool, good current and well oxygenated.I'm not sure of exactly what I will stock the tank, will depend on whats available to get at the time.Probably loaches, garra, and minnows/danios,etc.I'm sitting here watching a lrage danio terrorise some poor cichlids as I type.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

The non fish guy probably got mixed up butterfly/beaufortia
The ones in petmania are Beaufortia leveretti from China, hence the Honk Kong or Butterfly Loach thing
