Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi!

I have 2 Rosy or Odessa Barbs(I'm not sure which one they are)and I noticed yesterday one of them had a swollen eye, just one eye.It has doubled in size and it seems it's coming out.

Sometimes the other barb chases him from time to time for short periods of time but it doesn't seem he is hurting him. I have them for 1.5 years now.

Does anyone have any idea about this or is this any disease?
If it's a disease what treatment do I need?

Thanks for your help:)

Neki, its most probably pop eye, it can occur when a fish has a parasite in its eye but usually a secondary symptom of another disease the fish has. It can occur sometimes when the fish is stressed and more prone to illness which may be the case. Can you quarantine the fish? The popped eye appearance is actually the eyeball pressed outwards by fluid and the thin layer of skin you see around it is the tissue keeping it in its socket. As you can imagine its not fun for the fish and they may at times be unable to see from that side of their head as well as lose their appetite.
In terms of treating it, its hard to treat initially without knowing what the underlying disease may be. Id recommend using Esha2000 for a start to see if it improves. Any time my fish have had popeye Ive lost the majority of them so be prepared. Isolate it immediately if you can to a quarantine tank, if you can't then I would recommend you do a water change and monitor the fish, see if you can add Esha2000 to the tank if your other tank inhabitants allow. If it doesn't show improvement or if it worsens in the coming days then you will need to decide if its worth keeping the fish if its showing signs of distress. A quarantine tank is vital for occassions like this.
Let us know how you get on.
Gavin

Hi Neki,
As Gavin has said its almost certainly pop-eye, which is usually a secondary infection as a result of poor water conditiions.
I have battled this in the past, a result of my laziness.
My cure was - surprise - clean water and one course of esha 2000.
This should respond quickly enough with a series of large water changes. Also I would segregate the poor fish in case its normal everyday fish banter takes a bigger toll because it is sick.

Just a note on Esha 2000, this stuff is a bloody miracle worker.
Its probably the best all rounder out there, and if rumours are correct its going from the market so stock up.

Yeah our German contributor has it from a source.
Apparently they failed/didn't bother to apply for a EC licence.
