Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Question on angelfish!

Hi!

I bought 2 small Angelfish last friday and eating normally(always hungry) but yesterday I noticed that sometimes they swim with just one arm(fin) and they don't fight with each-other.

Is this type of swiming normal?

Also I've noticed in the Koi color fish that his arms before were transparent but not they seem to be covered by something white. I think it's fungus afer some research but I'm not an expert on this matter.

I added some salt in the tank 1 tblspoon/gallon as this was recomendend on lots of websites.

If it's fungus what type of treatment do i need?

I've got a Protozin treatment left.Do you think that will work?

Also I've 2 Otocinclus in the tank.Is it ok to treat the tank with the otos in?

Thanks:)

Neki, hello again.

From memory you don't have too much luck with Angel Fish, do you?

Your question is a little confusing so this reply might be a little 'off track', but I'll try anyway...

There is a good chance your fishes' fins are suffering from a type of Fungus, I'm assuming by the 'Arms' you are meaning the Pectoral fins (just behind the eyes and gills?) and these are the fins which provide much of both the stability and propulsion of Angel Fish, although some movement is also created by tail fin movement as well.

If, instead of being almost transparent, the fins are white as you describe there is a chance it is caused by Fungus of some sort, or - if the Fish are new - an incompatibility between the fish and your tank water.

Salt will help to ease symptoms of Fungus and so would Protozin, but I would suggest you do around a 50% water change and then use the Protozin at around 3/4 of the recommended dose (in case it will adversely affect your Otos) ie, if the dose recommended is - say - 12 drops per alternate days for four treatments then do eight drops every other day but do it over five - or even six - courses of treatment. But my feeling is you would need to reduce the salinity of the water significantly first.

You say they are feeding greedily which is never a bad sign with Angels...really this could be true for any fish too. So if this continues I think the Fins will clear soon enough, it might even be a small case of minor damage from fighting - possibly from before you bought them last week even. Angels are Cichlids after all and fighting with one another is part of the 'job description' so, although you haven't witnessed any conflict it might just be happening at times you aren't present.

So, if you aren't happy with them still do what I suggest - and if this doesn't clear it up then someone with experience of some of the more modern wonder cures like ESHA or that other stuff I can never remember the name of but which is made from Tea Tree oil can come in with suggestions regarding those. But I sort of suspect the Protozin will do the trick. I'm just even wondering if the fins might be contaminated by white spot so it might be worth gradually raising your temperature to the low eighties just in case, but keep a watchful eye on your Otos in case the sudden changes mightn't be to their liking - although all the ones I ever had were OK at that temperature as the rise was never an overnight one.

Hope at least some of this helps.

John
