Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

well just before crimbo ( yes i mentioned it , and i'm sorry )lastyear ... i posted a thread about my 2 keyhole cichlids spawning .....

needless to say i was over the moon , but due to circumstances beyond my control at the time , unfortunately the eggs lasted 3 nights till on the fourth morning most of them had turned white and were subsequently eaten ...

Well due to job loss in january i was left no choice but to move home ....

Unfortunately during this move my male keyhole passed away ( R.I.P. )and so began my quest to find another male mature enough to ( fingers crossed )pair with the existing female .

Well last week in AV i picked up a lone male keyhole and brought him home

Displaying happened between him and the female almost immediately , but nothing more .... and to be honest the 2 fish stayed opposite ends of the tank from each other alot of the time ..

So i wake up this morning and go downstairs to feed " The boys " before leaving for work ....

AND WOT DO I FIND !!!!!

Needless to say i'm delighted again ..... so its fingers crossed this time

martin

P.S. apols for vid quality ..... phone was used

they protected the eggs for 3 nights , but unfortunately on the fourth morning most of the eggs had turned white ( again !!! ) and they were eaten ...... i'm putting it down to inexperience on the male's behalf ...

i suppose the hard part is done , in that i have at least got a bonded pair now so fingers crossed it will all kick off again

the angels were much the same story ........ a lovely sized spawn and very well guarded by both parents .....but alas iot was not meant to be and on the 4th morning , I found the parents eating all the eggs ...... strange thing about the angels was that the eggs had not turned white like the keyholes had ....... again , maybe it was just inexperience but at least i can now regard them as a breeding pair !!

I wouldnt worry about it. It's perfectly normal for inexperienced parents to eat there own eggs after the first few goes at spawning. Keep water parameters stable and you'll have babies in know time

so i'm in dublin all day today at a dog show ... and i come home about five minutes ago ... i have moved the keyholes into a tank on their own ( apart from about 8 endler fry ) and this is wot greets me when i look into the tank

now ... this is the third time this pair have spawned so i'm hoping the fact that they have done this a few times now , added to the fact that they now have their own tank , might mean i will have some level of success ....

i want the whole of ireland to keepo their fingers crossed for me , lol

will keep yee posted

no luck in that tank yet .... but they are all healthy and thriving ..... need to move on one or two fish which i think are a small bit too active to be honest , but will hopefully manage to do that this week .

i have a breeding pair of hoplo catfish in the apisto tank and to be honest they seem to frighten all the rest of the fish in there because they are each about 5 inches long ... and the buggers never sit still

so hopefully when i move them on , i will achieve some success

i have a thriving colony of whiteworms ready to start feeding the tankas soon as i have just the apisto's in there , so fingers crossed that will bring them intop breeding condition ..

Never know ... if something finally goes my way i could have a schoolof keyhole cichlids pretty soon too .
