Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

ok latest update, I've been doing about 20% water changes every 2nd day and the carbon filter is still in. It will be in a week tomorrow and I will take it out. The water is back to normal Ph 7.6, Ammonia is 0ppm, Nitrite is 0ppm and Nitrate is 30+ish. The clown loach which i had written off has made a full recovery.:) It is swimming aroung now and feeding. The bala is still looking sad and I don't know if it will make a recovery but its still there and I'll just see how it is over the next few days. Have had no more fish loss as well :) Still dont know what exactly caused the problem but I may be out the other side of it.

Getting a quarantine tank this week.(lesson no 1) And I'm also getting another filter to be on the safe side. If I run this with the other one in the tank should I expect any problems or is it fairly stright forward. Thanks all for recent advise really appreciate it.

Good to hear things are working out:woohoo:

What filter you gettin and internal or external...?

Once you leave the new one running for a month to build the good bacteria things will be fine.....;)

Hey Alan, thanks for that. Was having a look at a few. I looked at the tetratec external you suggested, don't know anything about external filters. Was looking at another fluval 4+. Is there any anvantage to external or is it a matter of preferance. Saw another thread about someone setting up a 2nd filter on their tank so it was fairly well explained what to do. Do you have external yourself.

I dont have an external running as i dont need it yet.

The realy advantage to externals are that they are outside ur tank, which gives you more space and makes the tank look better. Easier to clean no messing around the tank etc

the main advantage of externals is the quantity / volume of media vrs internals plus its easier to clean and allows for different media types to be used at the same time.. Personally prefer eheims myself

Fishkeeping the Only way to get wet and wild

currently 25 tanks, and breeding is the aim of everything i keep

Finally some good news:) !!!
water parameters back to normal,no nitrite no ammonia:) ,little nitrate.
from this moment it's about keeping it that way, weekly quarter water changes and you wouldn't even need any extra filtration but you'd get extra security with two.
externals are the business i must say,no space taken in the tank and as Seamus says the volume of filtration is just much better ratio filterV/tankV.
Anyway, well done for getting this tank back to health or nearly;)

Well after doing a bit of research on external v internal it was down to the tetratec or the Ehiem. I went for the tetratec ex700. It will be more than adequate for my tank and even allows for a bit of manouver if I go a bit bigger:woohoo: Looking forward to getting it up and running. If all goes well over the next couple of weeks with the tank how long do you think I should wait before I slowly start to restock.

Id wait a little while yet, just till your sure all has settled down with the water quality. Cut back on water changes and just do say 15-20% a week or even a bit more say around 10 days.

Keep testing the water so you are sure that all is fine and after a few water changes if things are still ok then start adding some fish;)

What fish have you got left..?
