Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

This is a (dodgy) pic of my Fahaka, she's currently around 9 or 10 inches. I've had her since November last year.
Anyhow, last night I was watching her & she had cleared a big pit in the sand in the centre of the tank.
She was sitting on the bottom looking stressed - dark blotches all over her.
She usually looks kind of like this for a while when the lights first come on but this was different.
As I was watching her, she moved into the pit she had made & started laying eggs!
Thousands of them which came out in a twirling motion, she moved to a different spot & did the same again.
I left the eggs in overnight to see if she would eat them, she didn't - didn't think so as they're so small.
There are some African cichlid fry in the tank with her at the moment & they were looking decidedly fat this morning though.
I'll have to remove the rest of the eggs later today for fear of them spoiling the water quality.
She's still not herself today, keeping a low profile & seems to be constantly checking out her reflection in the tank bottom where she cleared the spawning pit.
What's interesting is that these fish have never been bred in captivity before. I've heard the odd report of a female laying eggs but I reckon to actually witness it was a once off.
Nobody knows how they actually manage to spawn in the wild as they are that aggressive towards one another..

Hopefully I'll have this one for a good few years yet so maybe in the future I'll try a breeding experiment

I'm pretty sure she was spawning with her reflection in the tank bottom as male & female clasp belly to belly when spawning!
Very strange.
I managed to find a report of someone that had bred them.
He bred them once successfully then the next time he tried they bred then tore each other to pieces with one of them ending up dead.
They are seriously bizarre fish..

I would say it was a joy to watch her spawn on her own.

Your Fahakas looks great 2poc.
I would say it was a joy to watch her spawn on her own.
Thanks !!
The only thing that worries me is the mess it made in the tank.
If she does it again when I'm off on holidays or something it would be one serious nitrate spike....

She was much more thorough in placing the eggs this time, last time she just laid them in the middle of the tank.
This time they were everywhere... In the roots of the plants and all over the decor.
They were fungused by the time I saw them, what a job trying to remove them at 11 o clock last night..
She was behaving strangley the past week or two, sulking and attacking her reflection etc. knew she was up to something..

Congratulations!....Beautiful Puffer!..never really hear of puffers spawning in aquariums!...
Cheers, it got me by surprise the first time too..
I'd rather she didn't to it to be honest, she gets way too weird before spawning.
Hopefully will be back to normal for another while now anyway
