Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi people , I finally got my quarantine tank and have it set up. It's a 20ltr AquaSafe. I take it its the same process as a normal tank but does it take the same length of time. Do I just wait 'till the water prams are ok before I can use it. Also may be a silly question but you do leave it running all the time... don't you, I mean even when your not using it as quarantine/hospital tank.:silly:

Hi jackojack
Yep it's the same as a normal tank ...just leave a while and keep an eye on the water params....also think about it if you don't leave it running all the time.... what happens when you need to use it in a hurry .....It wont be cycled if you have had your filters ect switched off....so your better leaving it running all the time

yes it takes the same time to mature unless your putting in a mature filter which will shorten the time, I would leave the bottom bare decoration maybe just an overturned pot and some plastic plants otherwise keep it virtually empty... keep it running as you never know when a fish will get sick or when you will see your dream fish in a lfs and you wouldn't want to wait for it to mature all over again... ideally have one quarentine and one hospital tank so theres no risk of cross contamination and have a set of nets only for use with these for the same reason...
hope this helps

Cheers guys, Sheag left it with just an up turned pot I got in LFS but I did put in a small bag of gravel, I only set it up this evening, would it be better if I took the gravel out then. I didn't use any water or filter media from my own tank as I've just got over a problem I had for the last few weeks, though it would be better to start fresh. A quarantine tank and a hospital :woohoo: :)

personally i keep them bare so no parasites etc can hide in the gravel.. Plus makes it easier to clean and you want it that way if your nursing a sick fish... Think of it a hospital with carpets, doesn't happen as it can harbour germs.. Gravel is your tanks carpet.. Just my opinion

Another point worth mentioning is that although you need to keep the filtration running (for reasons explained) if the tank is kept at room temperature and doesn't drop too drastically you can leave off the heater until you actually want to keep fish in it.
The Bacteria will survive perfectly well at cooler temperatures, even if they aren't quite as prolific then. Just put on your heater to warm the QT's water a little while before you actually put the fish in, thus saving a few bob on electricity.

Also try to have a cut of sponge in your main tanks filter, the reason being is that sometimes in QT tanks after using meds etc on the tank, the filter and bacteria can be also damaged depending on the meds used etc. Having a sponge already seeded in your main filter means you can use it at quick notice if required and the tank will run as normal. I alternate my cut sponges whenever Im finished a bout of treatments. eg. Im presently treating the QT and 2 fish therein with Sera Omnipur,I have to give another dose of the treatment next week as the fish havent recovered, however I know the Sera Omnipure can be harsh on the filter bacteria also so I will switch filters now for the second treatment. (Of course ensuring the first filter either gets binned or scalded in hot water, before it goes into the main filter again for re-seeding).
Phew, hope you can understand me! Also avoid crossing any equipment eg, Thermometers, decorations, NETS, etc into the main tank as it can cross contaminate.

Gavin, thanks for that, I think I understand what you mean and its really sound advice. As the two filters are different types (the one in the main tank is a Fluval 4+) the one I got for the QT tank is an AquaFlow 100 and has a filter cartridge. So just want to make sure I've got this... So I should i just cut an extra piece of sponge and put it between the two sponges in the fluval to seed and use it when I need it. It doesn't have to be a big piece of sponge...does it?.. as the filter cartridge on the AquaFlow slots into the housing neatly.

I only wish I had the QT tank sooner as I lost a lovely angle this evening. Not to mention all the others... with this last bout I had in the tank. I'm also glad I didn't use any water from my main tank now and started with a fresh cycle.
