Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Cherry Shrimp and little white dots!!

I bought some cherry shrimp there a week or two ago from a breeder (not an LFS) and when I got them home and put them in my tank a bunch of little white things also went into the tank with them.

At the time because there was a mix of male and female shrimp I thought that perhaps they were fry because they were clearly moving around on the bog wood in my tank.

However they haven't gotten any bigger and there seems to be a lot more of them now, which leads me to believe that they are not shrimp at all but something else.

They are way too small for me to get a picture of them but in terms of a description, they are tiny white dots (think nits or fleas!) and they are all over the tank now.

I did a big water change at the weekend and seemed to get hundreds of the things with my siphon but there seems to be just as many left in the gravel substrate of my tank.

Are they a pest of some sort? Anyone any idea what they are? How do I get rid of them?

Thanks,
Neil

Shrimp can be prone to pests and parasites. Check out this link on Planet Inverts. There's some photos of common bugs and see if its any of the little critters mentioned.

www.planetinverts.com/what_is_that_bug_in_my_aquarium.html

There's also some info about removing them with chemicals but I couldn't recommend it.

Best of luck,

Jaffacakehead.

Hey thanks Jaffa. The closest thing to what I have in my tank on that page was the seed shrimp. I was watching them again tonight and they do actually swim around like a drunken bee sometimes but when on surfaces they look like they are running around on legs.

Anyway apparently they are beneficial to the aquarium so I guess I dont need to do water changes every night after all :-)

Happy days!

Warning, do not buy from PlanetInverts. The owner is a scam artist and owes a lot of people money (including me). Great site, but don't part with your cash.
