Who would eat my Otto dudes
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Afternoon all,
I have found two deal dwarf ottos last night, one fairly eaten. I know these guys are always dying when introduced. Algae if rampant on my plants and bwood and rear of tank so no probs with food supply.
I am suspecting my Zebra loaches cos they think they are food?
Never had a death from attack in my community tank.
Gold barbs wouldn't do this? I have 7
Moved them to the 180 with Corys and Sword tails until I find the culpritt.

Unlikely that the golden barbs would attack and kill them. More likely the ottos died, fell to the bottom and were scavanged by their tankmantes. Zebra loaches are also peaceful by nature but will, like clown loaches, eat snails and small inverts.

Hi Mark
Have to agree with Jay on this one, Loaches are bottom feeders and so its in their nature to feed on anything which they would find on the bottom of the tank. Were you feeding the ottos any algae wafers /tablets ..? or were you assuming they would be ok feeding on the algae in your tank.

Cheers chaps, I am feeding algae tabs aswell.
Probably died and were snacked on. I guess those Zebra loaches just look shifty.
Snails appearing in the 180, loach food afoot.
Thanks all.

would agree with the lads most likely they died and where scavanged, ottos can be susceptible to dying if water conditions arent perfect and tank and filter totally mature... ps i've found loaches are only good snail eaters if they are hungry and in normal aquarium conditions this generally isnt the case, go for a few assissan snails instead

I've found otocinclus to be very sensitive in the past. If I bought 6 I'd almost expect to lose one or two in the first few days.
I don't think too many fish would try to attack them as they have those little spines that make taking them out of a net a nightmare, so I'd agree with the other lads.
That said they are cracking little fish for their price so keep the faith!!!

Loaches are eating the snails, albeit only the juvies. Zebras and Clowns. Tasty. I have removed all snails from my 180 to a 50l which I may use to breed(lol like they need help) snails for Juvie loach food for the crack. My fish only get abouts 10 dif food types

. The loaches see fit to have a crack at my arm when I am cleaning my tank, mmmmm loach fresh lol
Aquarium conditions are perfect in my 240l.
