Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi folks.
Anyone any experience with these? I had five or six "regular" harlequins and went to get a half dozen more and found these copper ones that, to be honest , are far more striking. The colours are unbelievable. I cant find much info on them and I am wondering if they have the same requirements of the regular ones. I know theres about a dozen different species of these fish but have never seen these before so needless to say Im now the proud owner of a half dozen of them :) . Thanks guys.

Yep, thats them. I picked up six to compliment the six regular harlequins already in the tank. Far more colourful little fish and from what I read they are a little smaller when full grown. They do shoal with the others but seem to prefer to stay with their own most of the time. Do you know if they will hybridize? If so, what should I expect in terms of how the fry will look?

Hi Jay.

I don't think they do cross but can't categorically say no.

I copied this from a website for you. Animal world.com

" There is no known way to sex these fish externally, so selecting a good breeding group is difficult. Breeding is also difficult to induce because water must be soft, acidic, and pristine clean. When these fish breed, they spawn in open water and scatter their eggs over the substrate and plants.
A good breeding tank set up would be a tank with soft acidic water, a sponge filter, a double layer of large marbles and a few plastic or real plants. The fish should be conditioned on live foods for a little while and removed after the eggs are laid. The fry need to be fed very small live food or liquid fry food until they can accept powdered flake food."

Thanks a mil Kev. Appreciate the effort ;) . Picked up an aquarium that Im going to use as a breeding tank. Just trying to decide on what to go for. Want to try my hand at the not so easy species if you get my drift. Anyhow, Im delighted with these little guys and am already thinking about getting a few more. Thanks again mate.
