Otto problem!!
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I recently toppped up my shoal of humphead glass fish.. i got up this morning to see one of them with an otto stuck in his gob!! Not much to be done for the poor otto by the time i seen them. problem is is that its still stuck in the humpheads mouth! so the ottos spines are obviously stopping him from swollowing or spitting it out.
so what do i do here? do i remove the humphead and then try to remove the otto? and if so, how do i go about getting it out? its in head first so if i pull it wont the spins rip the humpheads mouth?
any help or thoughts would be appricated!!

IMO Otto's a gonner,
Snip the Otto into smaller pieces within the Fishes' mouth ( he's dead by now ) If you are lucky, the larger Fish should spit the pieces out.
If the larger Fish is ok, I'd suggest, depending on what else is in the Tank, adding some fungicidal meds to prevent infection of the wounds within his oral cavity.

Thanks for the advice Kev, didnt think of cutting it. although both spines are in the oral cavity so dont know if it will help enough. certainly wont make matter worse though, so worth a try.. now all i have to do is catch the bugger!!
thanks again..

lol, the more time he remains in the glass fish's mouth the worse for the glass fish, I lost a 5inch Oscar because of a bristlenose getting eaten. I removed the bristlenose but the Oscar went around for three or four days, mouth gaping, then it died.
Best of luck.
Kev

ok, caught him with not too much hassle, there was no way i was gonna be able to pull the otto out, so i did what Kev suggested and cut as much off as possible. but the humphead still cant shift whats left. his mouths still fully extended. do i just wait and see or should i try further and risk stressing the fish more? again, any help would be great!

That's exactly what happend to me, all I can advise is to switch off the lights to reduce the stress, add some stresscoat if you have it to help any damaged tissue recover and up the aeration to compensate for reduced ability of the Fish to breathe due to the extended mouth.
Hope it works out.

try to use twezeers to crush otto at first. than maybe it will be possible to remowe it.. Tweezers are tiny enough to not make damage in oral cavity. If not than try to cut it... if otto is dead than cut off fin how much is possible and try to remowe it gently by gills but like hook from cought fish

Most important your hands have to be wet al the time to not damage slim coat too much. good luck

can you rotate the oto?
im just thinking that if you grab the oto
in a tweezers and rotate it and very gradually and pull it out
my thinking is that you will flatten down the lodged fins/scales
and it will allow you to inch it out while turning it
i might be wrong though!

If all else fails maybe literally cut out otto pieces util all thats left if the parts attached, that should give you room to pull out the last pieces a bit more safely, if it survives
Good luck.
