how often?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My water changes tend to be:
400 litre African Hap 30-50% weekly
240 litre Marine 20% weekly
240 litre Puffer 30-50% weekly
120 litre Plecos/juveniles 30% weekly
120 litre Tropheus (temporary) 30% weekly
Personally, I just couldn't commit to doing anything more frequent (none of them need it anyway)

I normally do a 25-30% every 3 weeks on my community freshwater tank and 25-30% weekly on my smaller corydoras fry tank. They need good clean water during the growing out stage and also there are alot of them.
10-20% every second day is absolute madness IMO unless you have a very specific reason to do so.
My advice is to keep a good eye on your fish behaviour and they will tell you how often you need to do changes.
Normally 25-30% every 2 weeks will suffice with average tropical fish in a not too loaded tank.
Dave

What you read about changing 10% per week or 25% per month etc. is only a guesstimate.
A good starting point is to test the Nitrate before a water change. Do your regular water change and see how much the Nitrate has decreased. By doing this you can roughly figure out how much you need to change.
It is up to you then to decide when to change the water and how much is needed to be changed.
Every time you do a water change you are making changes to the environment the fish live in. Big changes can stress the fish so IMO small regular changes are better.

i see i know the general rules of keeping the tank clean
but i just wondered would little and often be better in my opinion that would be less work in the long run
because youd be a fraction of the time doing the clean up because there wouldn be as much too
clean but could doing it too often upset the biological system?

I have an external running on a 180L and i clean it out probably once a month, which most likely isn't needed but i have a lot of plant leaves getting sucked in from new plants acclimatising.
The internal i have on my 120L i clean probably every second water change, i have 2 different colour sponges in it and i only clean one at a time.
As for water changes, i think what platty said is spot on. Tests are a great way tojudge when and how often to change your water. For me its about 15% for my 120 and 30% on my 180 to try battle the damned algae. Usually its about 15-20% too.
I wouldn't over clean, you could do more damage than good.
