Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Personally I'm surprised, given the position of the shop that it is still surviving at all.
My guess would be that the rent and rates for that property are astronomical.

Er, that shop was a small shop with great quality, once upon a time!
It was the store and Gavin that got me back into keeping a few years ago.
Many many thousand of € later, that dude has a lot to answer for!!!

Lads you're all entitled to your opinions but one thing is that when you take stab at a shop you aren't just taking a stab at the shop, you are taking a stab at some of the people that may have worked or may be working their ass off in that shop. It's not easy to work in retail and some people genuinely do the best that they can possibly do, within the guidelines/ restrictions that may be set out by the people that have a hold on the purse strings. I'm not looking for a heated debate, just please bear what I have said in mind if any of you are tempted to slag off this or any other shop in the future.

By the way I don't find any of the comments that have gone ahead of this one to be all that insulting! ;)

Edit: I must add that I am not speaking on behalf of Wackers or any shop, I no longer work in any petshop!

Nice one Rory,

The guys in most lfs nearly always try to help, always understand your disappointment and always or nearly always are paid a pittance and can be dismissed at the owners whim. I think I have struck up a good relationship with most of the guys and feel they are vilified regularly.

I don't have any views on any of the above as I have never been to this shop but what I do have a problem with is that I got my wrist slapped several weeks ago for mentioning the name of a shop. How is this different???   Please see quote below!!!

If you wish to post about a specific retailer, do not mention their name and only refer to the retailer in the 3rd party

One of the things that encourages me to go the City Center is to pass by Parnell and up to know for some reason I still comebto say hello. I miss the usuall folks who are trully friendly and helpfully with questions. It's worth the visit and you'll never know what's in store in the future.

That's because nothing there was insulting there to either the shop or its employees, at least not that I saw.

Haven't been into the shop on Parnell Street much recently but I had noticed the missing tanks when I dropped in a week or two ago. I had assumed that they were going to be moving them downstairs again, the way it used to be. Obviously I was wrong.

I didn't know that you had stopped working there, Rory. The shop will be the worse for it.

I haven't been to the parnell store for a good few while now.

Used to pop in to chat with Drew (I think it was his presence that originally took the store into the realms of a good selection of fish), then later with Gav (and I'm also a reptile keeper, so had a few things to chat to Gav with), a rather pleasant young lady, and some of the other guys (of whom I am not always certain of their names).

So, will that mean that there will be an even more limited selection of fish in the city centre? or might there be a revival.

Not too certain if I know who wolfsberg is.....but maybe we chatted at sometime. So, I'll say Hi.

I used to visit this LFS on a weekly, and would buy fish and dry good almost every time i was there, but that was before they moved everything from downstairs. Since the move about of everything, i have not really visited the store, as the number of tanks has been reduced, and the variety of fish has been reduced greatly also.

Soz Gav.......I didn't know you back in them days when Drew was there.

I'd known Drew from a shop in Monkstown, and so he was the only one I recognised when I ventured into Parnell Street.

So, I'll take back my comments and say.....

due to me not knowing anyone else in Parnell Street, I, in retrospective correctness, mistakingly cited Drew without mentioning Gavin's name as forwarding the fish collection there.

If Justine found out that I'd done you mis-justice then I'd be nagged.

But, that doesn't explain where you where hiding in those days, Gav.....B)

I actually remember the first time of meeting you....November 2006 (we'd just got back from some falconary in Ashford Castle....not that we are millionaires to afford staying there loike).
Justine thought you were a thoroughly pleasant fellow.
