Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

A good way to calculate how many fish you can put in your tank is to allow 1cm of fish per litre, so guppies i suppose grow to about 4 cm( correct me if im wrong) so that means 4 litres per guppy. Your 180 is more than enough for 25 guppies a have about 28 smallish community fish in my 65 litre tank and also have a new 180 litre that i haven't stocked yet.

But one thing to remember is female guppies can give birth to up to 40 fry a month and depending on the setup they might all survive if there's enough hiding places in the tank if not you may lose them all.

You will have plenty of space for 25 guppy in that tank, but do you want to limit yourself to just guppy's when you could do a nice community set up and still have guppies in there also. Guppies breed very easily, and will need no encouragement at all! Will you need to separate the fry from the adults, well they are livebearers and yes they will eat their own young particularly when they are that small. Similarly if there are hiding places in the tank, some of the fry will survive, it doesn't take long for the fry to start breeding also and before you know it you will be over-ran by fry and guppy's everywhere!

Substrate doesnt matter to the guppy, they arent bottom feeders so couldnt care less about the substrate!
For a tank that is 180 litres you could look at getting other fish also. If its breeding that is your fancy, then check out other fish that could breed also. Believe me Guppy fry are great when you start, but before long you wont even try to save them cause you will be just overpopulated. They are born colourless as fry and wont develop their colours for a few months in my experience. Also you will need to watch that there isnt too much inbreeding.(not an issue if you aren't giving the fry away).

Best of luck with the project, guppys are wonderful looking fish but alot of them these days aren't as hardy as before. Still the males certainly catch the eye in terms of looks and colour.
Check out endlers also, another very nice fish.(smaller again),but mind not to mix as they will crossbreed with the guppies.

Gavin
