Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

A friend took me down to Dublin to get the fahaka from kinsealy petstore.

We left at 8am, and reached the shop at 2.30pm:woohoo:

We got lost soo many times, its embarrassing;)

But got the wee fahaka, and made it home by 5.15pm:)

Hes doing well, eating snails etc

We're currently fixing the bigger tank that we had cracked. and hope to get it sealed tomorrow:)

Get it up and running and cycled, and get the fahaka into it!B)

hes my 2nd puffer since december.

other one is a green spotted puffer set up in a brackish tank.

such great fish to keep.

the fahaka will be the only fish in his tank.

they grow so quickly in the first year.

will be looking an upgrade in a years time:)

fish are better looked after, and better fed than the rest of the family!

Glad you found your way Lesley!

Were you tempted by the Palembang or Congo puffers in Kinsealy?
I kept a Palembang for a while myself but found him very shy..

the guy in the shop was showing me the other puffers:)

ya never know when i may be down again:silly:

i was told that feeding mealworms to the fahaka wasnt so good, fatty and hard to digest?

hes went thru all my snails since friday, and there was about 35 snails in the tank!

so will need to wean him onto frozen shrimp, cockles etc

hes settled in well, and yet to be named:blush:

Mealworms are horrible things too, totally freak me out...

I'm not sure of the best diet for a puffer of that size, obviously you need hard shelled food such as snails to keep the teeth worn down but they need to be appropriate for the size of his mouth.

My puffer eats mainly Mussels, 3 at a time & the occasional prawn.
Mussels are a perfect diet for puffers so this is what you want to get him onto.
I'd recommend you pick up the 'Puffers of fresh and brackish water' aqualog book. Its fairly cheap as aqualog books go & a great reference.

The folks at thepufferforum.com are a helpful lot too, they have caresheets for feeding, treating puffers etc.

Re: names - mine doesn't have a proper name either..

She is big and African & if she could speak I'm pretty sure she'd say 'What you lookin' at White-boy' so it would have to be a name fitting for a large coloured lady. Maybe Aretha Franklin

have ordered more ramshorn snails, and he just looks at the prawns, cockles and bloodworms floating past him:angry:

he has a belly on him tho, and have seen him poo..

spose with 35 snails in his tummy, he might not be hungry yet..
