Severums possibly fighting
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I recently bought two severums off a member of this forum and since introduced to my tank another severum i already had is being constantly chased around the tank by the smaller of the two. Ive even noticed his tail is a bit shredded up. Any suggestions on what i should do would be appreciated.

mmm well Ur current severum has already established his territory. Most Cichlids are aggressive to newcomers... Iv never had this problem as i add cichlids at the same time to avoid agression... but maybe try rearrange the tank ornaments and bogoak some people do this to minimize aggression with oscars as they must form new territories...
The aggression might stop once the serverums shown them who is boss... how big is the tank?

First off thanks for replyin im only a beginner when it comes to fish. Yea the new one is doing the chasing. The tank is 240 litres and the cichlids are no more than 4 inches. Its just the one i previously had is a lovely fish that used to always be out at the front of the tank and since introducing the new ones he is reduced to hiding in a cave at the back of my tank:(

ski mask my advice would be to re jig the decor in your tank there for any terrotories that already established can be broken up and after the re shuffle any terrortories held before can be shared and with a bit of luck they will live happily toghter but then again the one s you put in could be a male and female and the new male doesnt want to share
at the end of the day it becomes nite

i dont really have experience with severums.. i kept one b4. I have firemouths and other cichlids.. and its normal for them to fight.. When i introduced my cichlids first they fought alot.. Once dominance and territories were established it cooled down... they still fight but its normal.. the same should happen for u..
good luck,

Are both of the new Severums chasing the original fish or is it just the one? If its just one it may well be a male chasing off your old fish if the other is a female. I had a similar problem before when I kept Severums. Try removing all three fish and rearrange the tank. Knock the kights off then reintroduce all three at the same time. Keep a close eye on the goings on for a few days and see what happens. They may well squabble for a while but it should settle after some time. If its a case of your old fish getting a serious beating then you will have to make a decision on which of the two you want to keep. Hope this helps, good luck.
