Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I saw a dwarf African Albino claw frog and was really tempted. Would they mix ok in a tank with guppies and tetras ?

Hey Barr,
I've mixed the dwarf frog with tetras and guppies and I've never had a problem. I love the frogs, they can be calm on the bottom of the tank and take off like a bat outa hell to the top and float down to the bottom again.

Yeah They are perfect with guppies and tetra's. Sure i have fry with mine and he doesnt eat em,,, well, he cant catch them. U might have to hand feed him because it takes a while for them to find food, other fish eat it up b4 he can find it.

I they might of been misslabled in shop. If its Albino its probably a African clawed frog. These grow pretty big and will gladly eat ur fish. Iv never seen or heard of a albino dwarf frog..... Maybe im wrong?

the species you probably saw is a xenopus they get massive and eat fish.to be avoided for community situations.dwarf spcies are a better Idea.

Thanks for replies :)

So am I right in thinking from the above there is no such thing as dwarf albino frog ?

Would ye recommend a particular type of dwarf frog that would mix well?

Alex when you say hand feed them , is it a matter of waiting for them to go to the top and give them their share seperate.

Also do they need special food or would the fish flakes suffice?

Yeah, there are geniuine dwarf frogs, Ihave not seen an albino form, but they may exist.
the common dwarf species is Hynenohirus spp they do not look anything like the Xenopus spp which are rounded, sort of pear shaped bodied in comparison to the Hynenohirus spp which are sort of scrawnwy looking... if that is a good description, they can be kept with small tropical fish, just make sure they get food as they are not an agressive feeder.
try some of the reptile forums for good info about them and make yourself familiar with the differences between the two species , if you pick the Xenopus you will end up with no fish!!!

They don't come to the surface for food. They eat from the ground. Just place the food in front of his nose and he will gobble it up. Try to feed bloodworms shrimp ect..

I got fed up of sticking my arm in the tank... so i keep a wooden skewer beside the tank and i feed him using this.

he does find the food on his own... but alot of the time the other fish eat it all up b4 he can find it. I only hand feed mine like 3 times a week.
