Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Lights are another cost.If you look on each item-the power consumption is on them.

As Tim says, the power consumption is,or should be,written on each item,in Watts. Then go to your leccy bill and see how much you are paying per unit,an old ESB bill here shows 14.55cents.That unit is 1000W,or a kilowatt.
Its easier to give an example,so lets say your filter is 20W,divide 1000 by 20 and you get 50,so your filter will cost 14.55 cents to run for 50 hours(not counting vat).
Note, this is form items that run constantly, and your heater dosnt,it comes on and off as neccesary,so would be very diificult to work out.
I have a small plug in gadget that looks like a fancy timer,it does all sorts of calculations for me,I just enter in the price I pay per unit, and it tells me how much the item I plug into costs me to run.I got it for 9.99 in Aldi, but they dont carry them all the time, try Maplin.
My methods above may not be the best or most accurate, but they give me an idea anyway.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

My forty tanks increased the electric bill just about $100 US per month.

The Lights are the biggest killer, unless you runa few fx5s that is.

108w an hour lighting 12 hours, I am assuming they use 108w
21w an hour tetratec 1200 24 hours
100w heater avg 15w per hour
6w an hour airpump

Thats my planted, I can add this up for the 24 hours and know what I am burning through.
The above is way too much juice for what I am running, with the leccy going up a couple of 100%s a year.

In my 450 I plan to get one of those 6w 960l 8 line air pumps with some filter sponges and defusers. 5 sponges and 3 defusers to replace 21w filter 6w internal filter and 6w airpump
33w to 6w per day as these devices are 24 hours. Big saving.

Juice is my only restraint at the mo.
