Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Des just landed his dream fish, see this thread

www.irishfishkeepers.com/cms/component/o...id,5/id,69612/#69656

so what is your dream fish and please give a few reasons and a bit of info.

Personally I don't have a particular dream fish, more like a gaggle of them, so more likely to be got that others, here is a few:

L236, a Hypancistrus like the Zebra plec, but with wavy lines.

CW016, a Corydoras, mainly white with a green patch on the side, recently bred in America and there are now some specimens in Europe.

Wild caught red back angels - the real thing not some bred concoction.

Better still there are some fish I already have that I would like to breed (usually the easy bit) and raise successfully (usually the tricky bit)

L046 Hypancistrus Zebra. They must be old enough by now, even if they seem to have hardly grown!

Altum angels, definitely not old enough.

Corydoras weitzmani, once thought extinct but now frequently available, they are fairly easy to breed, but mine have not read the same websites and obstinately refuse to oblige.

L354 I got a lovely pair of these a couple of years ago, I have never made any particular effort to spawn them, but it would be great if they did, a lovely looking L number. There is at least one report of captive breeding, so you never know.

Kevin, lovely bettas particularly the foerschi

The first one show, Betta taeniata looks very like Betta simplex, which I have:

I have not done aything to keep the youngsters butt here are a few in the tank, if you want a couple.

Des, that is some wish list, I had to google half of them :-)

Leva, I saw a blue spot ray in AV a while back, lovely.

Tetra, I am not a big marine fan, don't mention the seahorses - I am still in recovery - but that is a smart looking Tang, are they rare or expensive, I have never seen one.

i know it's not major but i'd love a tiger oscar as i have the tank for one, but as stated arowana's are beautiful fish, i was once obsessed wit pike, at one stage i wanted to catch a young one out of the canal and keep it but woke up sober the next day and had second thoughts.

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

mine has to be a black tang, i would hope to be the first irish fish keeper to own one, just for the prestige although it is a beutiful fish, i think i may have to settle for a white cheek tank, looks quite simular but a fraction of the price.

Well there not rare in the states have seen them for $100 but you would have to order them or get lucky in your LFS(Mostly seen them on hold). Its not so much finding them than finding a good one fat and eating pellets (NLS) as there classed for expert keepers although if you have a really big tank (min 300g) and feed well you should be good.Marine fish are in a different league than freshwater not that I don't find freshwater exciting. But marine is amazing how relationships form with fish and invert/fish how fish can come attached to you YES YOU. How they can look for attention how one fish serves a purposes for the other. The list goes on once you start a marine tank Daragh the bug has bitten and you'll start thinking about going bigger,I honestly think we are in the early stages of going marine in Ireland but in a years time I think there will be more activity in the marine section than the fresh.

Mine is Cephalosilurus fowleri ( rusty jelly catfish)
Its not the nicest looking or most colourful but for some reason i just really want one.
I seen one in england a few year ago and wanted one since then.
Another one would be erythrinus erythrinus.
Dan.

Saw one over in England a few months ago, beautiful.

Mine would probably be a lungfish... not exactly unattainable but I only have space for one big tank and I don't want to strip it all out for one single fish. Such great personalities!

Tetra Tetra, I don't think marine will ever become as popular as freshwater, but who knows. I love looking at marine fish, but none ever appeal to me enough to make me even consider keeping, don't ask me why, probably for the same reason I find ugly catfish attractive! I make exception for the inverts, I find them fascinating and could watch them all day long. Also look at at the video oppurtunities I would have with an invert tank :woohoo: So far I have been good, anyway I don't have room for another tank, freshwater or marine and certainly don't have the time, maybe one day. The nearest I have come to a marine is with the seahorses, I think they are totally fascinating, everything about them is amazing, so IF I ever set up a marine tank 99% certain that it will be for seahorses.

Dan Dan, I can definitely see the attraction there, lovely fish, reminds me of a wels cat (I think it was) I bought years ago but returned 24 hours later after it ate 11 platies on the first night! I would have been happy to keep it, but I got orders..... it's a long time ago :-)

Dream fish!!!
The list could be long but there are a few that always come back to me!
One is Panaque suttonii or blue eyed Panaque, only seen them once 15 years ago.tried to source one but a "little" money is required as well as an adequate size tank!
Second would be those Red Arowanas i've seen in Thailand, just beautiful and so colorful!
Last but not least:the great Arapaima gigas or Pirarucu!!!!!
Obviously need more like a tropical lake to keep one but they are absolutely amazing!Saw my first one ever in Cologne in Germany, fantastic zoo with fantastic aquarium section including a giant tank with 2 Arapaimas and a few Osteoglossum bichirosum .
Just to add another little dream fish or more like a whole set-up like Takashi Amano and his Altum angel tank!

Des,congrats for your Merodontus tigrinus have always loved them too!

Man oh Man, what can you say about Mandarin Fish, beauty in miniature, only had one but a large mature Tank is required with plenty of copepods etc as they are not the easiest to feed, on the other hand, there is a type of Mandarin that is easier to care for but I obviously got the toughie. The following pic is A Mandarin, not sure of the type.
