Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

In my opinion I have always found guppies to be the hardest to keep, saying this I only ever bought them for my LFS so disease could be the reason?? They seem to be just an awfully delicate fish to keep.

Raised in a cocktail of antibiotics so that there colours can look great and imported from Singapore where they produced by the thousands purely for the reason of a quick sale and when the cocktail of antibiotics and chemicals wear off they die off in turn. They are often the first fish many people buy due to their looks, and they shouldnt be a hard fish to keep to be honest. Maybe Im wrong, but Ive found you cant go wrong with ones you breed yourself.

Sadly that wasn't always the case - Guppies were always regarded as 'beginners fish' and many an Aquarist cut his teeth on them - they were literally, to quote an often used description, "Bullet-Proof".

Unfortunately, like so many fish now coming from fish farms in the far east, they have suffered beyond all belief and now are regarded as almost unkeepable...now, I realise there will be people who can refute that - and have the greatest success with keeping and breeding them, but my guess would be that the originators of those better strains didn't come from the stew ponds of the previously mentioned area!

I heard that guppies could be hard to keep so i started the tank off with danios and tetra first and then added the guppies.i had me tank setup for about 6 months before i added the guppies and they are all fine. The tank they stay in now gets a two weekly water change( okay i am lying threeish weeks maybe, but they are fine along with all their fish buddies.

Follow me up to Carlow

don't buy in hell holes, most small danky pet stores are a disaster (some big ones are even worse), there is only one shop i buy my fish and thats the original aquatic village in "brittas", i only buy from reputable fish entusiasts. as for online, i'd avoid that like a bad habit.

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

Hi Eric,

I am sorry to hear that some of ur fish died, u need to quaranteen the fish u buy before adding them to ur main set up.
This has to be done with all fish added to ur tank, constantly adding fish to ur tank is not good at all.
When i add fish after 2-3 weeks of quaranteen, depending on supplier i do water changes twicw weekly and monitor the new fish, if they show any signs of illness, breathing frantickly, going to the top for air, mucud, spotd fin damage etc etc. They are removed for a further two weeks.
I know u dont have any transport, but try and get urself an lfs u can trust, the one u told me about is not a popular lfs because the fish are not of great quality. Dont go there again, u will just destroy ur tank.
As u are aware i breed guppies and the stock i have are really hardy, maybe there are other guys on here that will sell u some quality guppies.
Remember that the guys on here look after there fish and they have no diseases, well they wouldnt sell them to u if they had any problems.
Raise the frequency of ur water changes to twice a week for a month and do a daily inspection of every fish( even the old ones ), if they do not look good, well put them in the quaranteen tank, since u have a second tank now.
How are the bns. Do not add anymore fish for a few weeks
Keep in touch, let me know how u fair out.
Regards.
Denis
