Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

having had one of these (well the black gkf) very briefly during my venture in2 the fish world which it lasted only a few days and which led to later studies i found that these grow pretty big, most sites claimed 20ish inches (not to sure if that was captive bred of wild caught) that's all the info i can offer as it was about 4years ago and i wont google/bing/or yahoo for your answer but i suggest you give it a bash along with any other info supplied here by the lads and possible ladettes

Cheers, Darren

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

Well get pretty big so you would need a very big tank...20 inches or so... You should only keep 1 in a tank! they like lots of plants and places to hide... They are pretty timid but would gobble up little fish when big... they would prefer a sand substrate. you should feed them earthworm, bloodworms, shrimp ect...

Alex...Deleted your (almost) duplicated post.

I would just add that if you do get one make sure the tank is completely covered - they really can escape through cover gaps which aren't there, a bit like Snakeheads!
Both would put Houdini to shame.

I have 3 of these together about 3 months or so. Do scrap the odd time but no signs of damage to any. Fins are in perfect condition. I dont see a problem keeping more than one considering the tank is big enough. Great fish in my opinion, will hand feed and they like to bite your hand when your trying to clean and move decor or whatever you'd have your hand in the tank for.

I just bought a very small one in Seahorse Aq two weeks ago and he has settled in wonderfully. Hasn't bothered any fish and they don't bother him. So far he has taken up residence under the filter, but hoping he will change home with the cave system I'm putting in with my DIY background. Only comes out at night, but makes him even spookier when you see the white tips catch the light. Very unusual fish, if a bit shy (although only in tank very short time, so may become more adventurous).
