Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

How about some Malabar dwarf puffers... maybe 7-9 (100% freshwater)
or
micro rasbora galaxy, fan shrimp and tons of kuhli loaches
or
8 or so African dwarf frogs, maybe try breed them..
or
A betta tank with tons of kuhli loaches.... you could make it a blackwater tank with Indian almond leaves... people have breed kuhli loaches in blackwater...

Dwarf Cichlids all the way Gerry. My brother has a 60ltr tank running with Appistos and has begun breeding them in it. Great little fish and because they are always in demand the fry are easy to move on when grown a bit. Theres loads of different types, some a little more demanding than others but definately worth looking into mate.

Hi Gerry,

When I first started out with these I popped a few questions here. On page two of the link you will see pics of some ideal Appisto setups. www.irishfishkeepers.com/cms/component/o...mit,10/limitstart,0/

I no longer keep them. I gave the setup to my brother and he has had great succsess with them. Its a great little display and he has it looking well. Ill get a shot of it later and post it here for you to have a look as its a 60 litre and might give you an idea or two for your own setup if you decide to go down that road.

Why not try a basic marine setup?

If you go low-tech all you'll need is some salt, live rock and pumps for flow.

You'll obviously need to buy the ancillary equipment such as test kits, hydrometer etc. A couple of clowns and some non photosensitive inverts and you'd have a very rewarding little setup.

I think marines would be out of my budget im afraid, plus i read that smaller marine tanks are harder to keep. Thanks for the input tho. Gerry

Smaller marine tanks are harder to maintain but so are smaller freshwater tanks for the same reason.

It is more expensive than freshwater for sure though prices have come down a lot.
I'm keen to dispell the myth about marines being hard to keep. In my experience they really are not..

I was in a similar position to yourself with an empty 50 litre tank which I ended up setting up like I mentioned.

A few pumps that were salvaged from old Juwel filters and some live rock. Lightly stocked with fish and inverts and the tank was a doddle, ran for over a year and never had a problem.
I upgraded later to a 240 litre and opted for more sensitive animals such as corals and anemones. Things got more complicated then for sure but the experience and confidence I had from the low tech system stood me well.

What Patrick is saying is true Gerry, a small marine sysytem wouldnt be too much trouble or expense when done right. Anyway, if you decide to go fresh, heres a few snaps of my brothers 60ltr Dwarf Cichlid setup. He keeps Apistogramma macmasteri and has bred them in this setup. You may get a few ideas from them at least...

I was taking the plunge into marines so had to trim the fat ya know. Theres only two fish in that setup. A male and female macmasteri. The female has bred in this tank but that male she had that brood with died a few weeks back but theres about 20 of his fry in a tank downstairs and they are doing very well. The male in this setup now is a lot smaller and they are yet to court but they havnt attacked one another so thats a good start. The substrate here is just playsand with a little gravel mixed in to give the plants something to root onto. Most of the plants here are Anubias with some Riccia on the surface. There is some Green Cambomba at the rear right and they all seem to do very well under a 14 inch T8 bulb.
