Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I did years ago when I had no idea about proper fish care. I had 2 in a 70 litre aquarium with teras. To my surprise they soon grew huge and I had to sell them on! They didn't actually eat any tetras but I'd say it would not have been much longer.

From my experience they are the most interesting and beautifull fish I have ever kept. They love to eat blood worm or anything for that matter but don't know when to stop. They seemed playfull and non-threatening to other fish (to me at least)

They are nocturnal and really need caves or dark havens to retreat to during the day. I't imagine the smallest tank to keep them must be 200 litres but I'm not sure.

They really are a beautiful fish, but can grow very big- 15-20". I have a small one in a 180L, but know I'll be upgrading later, so will be able to house him in a more appropriate tank as he grows. As dantheman mentions, you won't see them much during the day and then at night they camouflage beautifully, so hard to see then also. I have a nice LED moon light to see my nocturnal fish and that picks out the Knife fish's elegant rippling fin quite nicely. Although they are generally quite peaceful, you should be careful what you house them with- there are a lot of stories about fish going missing as the Knife fish grows.

Although mine doesn't do it yet, they will become quite trusting to the point of accepting food from your hand. Together with their canine-looking face they become a real pet.

It's a great fish, and who couldn't love an animal that can swim upside down and in any direction with a gorgeous, long, shimmering fin the length of its body? Beware though, they tend to freak you out by 'playing dead' at times! Many occassions I have looked at the hiding hole for my Knife and he was lying on his side completely motionless only to jump up and go foraging as soon as the light goes out. On another occassion I found him completely vertical with his mouth touching the ground, not moving for about an hour impersonating the plant he was behind! Odd, but wonderful.
