Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Does anyone on here keep any WILD TYPE Bettas???????

Don't usually see them in the shops maybe with the exception of Betta Simplex.

I'd be very interested in hearing about where they can be aquired and what people's experiences have been with keeping/breeding them.

I've just searched the previous posts and found that JohnH has kept Betta Macrostoma. From what I've read these are extremely difficult to keep alive and are quite rare. I don't know if my own fishkeeping skills would be up to it.

How did you get on with these John?

It's a pity you didn't make it to the Show in May - Anton Lamboq had some for sale there after his lecture, Two differently-sourced B. Edithae and some juvenile B. Falx.

As with the answers to Stretnik's question, the answer lies in the very small demand for them.

Your back up post occurred between reading and replying to the first one.
Yes, I do have Macros - a breeding pair which have so far only had one lot of eggs but sadly the male decided he would have eggs for breakfast so now I waiting and hoping for another happy occasion and that this time he carries them through to the completion of the hatching duration.
As you suggest they are very particular about water conditions and are pretty hard to get hold of, for myself I had been on the lookout for these for at least five years before I 'got lucky'.
As with Fish like L-046 Zebras the export of live Macros is now banned, these by the Sultan of Brunei - no less...but as with the previously-mentioned Fish scarcity means high prices and once high prices are involved there are unscrupulous people ready to 'bend the rules'.
I did hear, though, that anyone caught selling wild Macros from Brunei faced the rather 'ultimate' punishment of hand-removal!

Wow. Hand removal?

I wouldn't exactly give my right arm for a breeding pair of Betta Macrastoma but they are beautiful fish.
Congratulations on keeping them successfully and I hope they breed for you again soon.

Thanks,

Jaffacakehead.
