Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,:)

I'm new to fish keeping, looking to set up a tropical freshwater tank.
I know a lot of different fish now from reading the posts here, but i don't know how big they get.
I'd like to know types of tropical fish that stay around 5inches as i want to have as many different fish as i can.

Any suggestions and advice will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Roy

Yes, welcome to the Forum,
I think you might have to establish what type of Fish you are looking for, what size tank you have and do you want a planted or non-planted community tank of Fish.
Sadly, and you've probably realised this already, not all Fish are compatible with others.

Wow, 4 replies already in a short time.

Thanks a lot Kev, John, Craig, and Darren.

Tank size is 120L, not planted at the moment, but going to plant it as soon as i get a chance. I haven't a clue about what kinds of fish are compatible, i do have one tiger oscar, and another is creamy coloured oscar with red eyes, don't exactly know what type oscar he is as it only said Oscar assorted on the label in the pet shop. I do realize Oscars get massive, and they are quite aggressive, so i'll find a new home for them when i get all my new fish, be sad to see them go though, as i like them a lot, but just haven't got enough space for them.

Thanks all again for the warm welcome and advise.

Roy i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but 5inch fish are a no go i'm afraid, you have a nice tank for a small community of smaller fish maybe tetras and a gourami or so (maybe some dwarf chiclids but i'm not in that line of info as of yet) but your very limited size wise, and those oscars need rehoming pronto. see if lads on here will swap you or buy them from you

The creamy-coloured lad is an Albino (classic sign of albinism is all darker markings gone as well as red eyes).
All animals suffer this when they are too inbred.
Some people like this effect, others dislike it equally as much.
As Dar says, your tank really is too small for a community of 'up to' 5" Fish, but you can set your sights a bit lower in the maximum sizes stakes and still have a pleasant enough assortment of Fish.
Some people like to have communities of Fish from a given area - The Amazon, for example, but I think for someone just getting under way a selection like this would be far too limiting.
The advice I adhere to personally is to go to a few Fish Shops, and look online and on Fora, with a pen and notepad and jot down the names of the ones which take your fancy, then return with the list and ask whether any or all of them would be compatible - don't worry about appearing perhaps a little silly, trust me, we all started once (some a lot longer ago than others) and all needed a helping hand initially. We have a bit of a phrase in the Aquatic Forum game - 'The only silly question is the one you forgot to ask'.
Good luck with your mission - it's good fun, believe me.

i believe so but the main reason i'd say it's a wrong set up is that most of your fish need to be in larger groups, the barbs alone are best in groups of 5 plus, i'd be more inclined to say 7 plus to limit bullying

edit: oh gold gourami is a three spot gourami, these reach around 5-6inches (lovely fish i had the opaline) denison barbs roughly the same i thinks
