Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Motoro are among the easiest rays to keep, not being particularly demanding on water chemistry as long as its not extreme, however nitrates i would try to keep low, below 30ppm, will stop moving and feeding if water not clean. Food would mostly be frozen, bloodworm, krill, prawns, lancefish etc and will even become handtame (we have had many specimens, incl. some marine sp. do this). Can be kept with most fish providing they cant be eaten (small tetras, barbs etc) or are aggressive, work well with other med/ large fish incl. arowana and large peaceful cats and the less aggressive cichlids like oscars and severums etc. They generally dont get much bigger than 18" disc, however i did know a frenchman who had a huge specimen about 20" disc!!! tank size would need to be atleast 5x2x2 to allow the ray with swimming space and generally are best kept on sand or bare bottom, however gravel can be used providing its not too sharp. I would advise an external filter with an internal as back up to keep things right and testing water is a must. Hope this helps, could write more but reckon that about covers the basics, call up or phone for more info

Very nice.... In with the cichlids & catfish or on his own?
all cichlids, pleco's, wolf fish, softshells, polypterus and anything else that might attack him have been moved into different tanks
he's in with an arowana, a pike characin, an eel, a big huge banded knife fish and a load of cats
i put him in on tuesday, stayed up half the night checking to see that he was alright
it's a pity i couldn't leave the uaru in with him, thaught if i could get away with any cichlids it might be him but he showed way too much interest and had to be moved
the motoro is surprisingly active and very inquisitive, he keeps going into the cats territories but they don't seem to mind even moving out of the way for him
i had to remove a big pot from the tank as he got stuck in it twice
he'd make you laugh
great little Charactor

Read a story about someone's Apurensis being stung by a stingray because of the ray going into a big pot like that so I think you made the right move there!

Also most people recommend that you get them on pellets and they recommend Hikari Tropical SINKING CARNIVORE PELLETS. I am trying to find someone who sells them in Ireland but i am not having any joy

I have a Potamotrygon Reticulata for about 5 months now. Eats bloodworm and earthworm, have tried him on some other foods but he aint taking a fancy to them. What type of prawns are you feeding him ?

just normal frozen supermarket style prawns, just once there's no added this and no added that...
must try the pellets, but so far, he doesn't care for them...
