whats the best tab or wafer for otos
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi all
ive added another 5 otos to the two that were in my planted tank
whats the best grub for these lads?
i have fed courgettes but they are absolutely nuts for
JBL novo tabs (although that doesnt necessarily mean they are good for them)
actually all my fish and shrimp are nuts for the nova tabs
(rasbora hengeli, cory hastatus, cpd, otos, and rc shrimp
the other fish get bloodworm, flake and live grindals
but still queue up for the nova tabs ad the bits that fly off them
cheers

I feed them tetra tabimin. This also breaks up easy like the novo tabs. They also get the usual household greens like cucumber, peas ....
I dont think i would use tabimin in a heavily planted tank because it breaks up easy and quickly. A lot of it would end up lost amongst the plants helping to foul the water.

To be honest i dont know what is in novotabs, but i do know a lot of fish like them.
Offer a pea with the skin removed every now and then. They seem to love them.

Howdy!
Ottos can be fussy. One tank i have, they only like tetra pleco wafers, but go off them if the packet has been opened for more than a month. The other tank, they like tetra plecomin tabs.
Both tanks will take nutrafin max pleco logs when they are hungry.
All will demolish the jbl novo pleco(M) and novo fect(V), (and tabmin(M)), but if fed the non veggy version, tend to get bloated and sometimes die.
They will (eventually, they ignore it till it frements in the water!) eat the Tetra natura algae block without problems, but it's an expensive treat.
Courgette, freshly washed, sliced (skinned if not organic!!!!!) and microwaved for 30 seconds, held down by a porcelain chopstick holder always keeps them happy. The timing of the microwave/ removal from tank needs to be fine tuned. Under-cooked, they ignore it till it's mushy. Then it fouls the tank before they eat it. Over-cooked, it floats and dis-integrates too soon. Aim for 30 hours tank time.
Quickly nuked frozen peas are also good! Think 20 peas to 20 seconds to 800W. Then squish the peas out of the shell (mind the fingers!!) Feed as much as they will eat in about 1 hour...(not worth the clean-up after that)
Hope this is of use.
T.

thats what i was wondering
the novotabs are a mix
their blurb.....
JBL NovoTab meets the specific feeding requirements of omnivorous ground-feeding fish and fish of the middle water levels with a specially balanced mixture of high-grade ingredients including 10% freeze-dried animal organisms: fish and fish by-products, cereals, vegetables, yeasts, vegetable by-products, insects, crustacea, algae as well as eggs and egg byproducts.
jsut coz the otos eat them does not need they are good for them
(i eat Bigmacs! after all!)
cheers

Ottos are like a little wreckin crew, watching them eat and then work together to turn over a sprout to get at the other side is hilarious.
I used pieces of Hikari wafers, they do break down easily, if you put in a small piece they will find it no problem as a whole one is a bit much and will spread over the tank before it gets eaten and stinks up the water.
Mine were very healthy little munchers, fed on inner thick white Lettuce leavess, cooked sprouts, cooked skinned marrowfat peas and hikari wafer fragments.
