Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

moving tank tips please

We are planning to move house next month; journey time from door to door is less than ten minutes.

I have a 70L tank with approx 20 inhabitants.

I was hoping to empty the tank and refill in new location with warm water, add an appropriate amount of SafeStart and replace them. Is this likely to work? Should I try to transport their own water?

What's the best way to transport the fish themselves?

You should be able to get some fish bags from your lfs, I would keep the filter media in some tank water in a bag or bucket with an airstone to keep it alive.

70l should be quite quickly set up so fish bags should do, remembering to put in a decent bit of tank water into the bag and twice as much air, cover them up so the fsh don't get freaked.

Fill the new tank with a lower temp, a deg lower than the tank was, the fish in bags will cool a bit, pop in the filter and get it runnin and test the water levels. If all ok then add the fishies and set heater to the original temp, will slowly raise by a deg, which should be agreeable to te fish.

Others will have more, maybe better advice for you. Good luck.

Hi,

I have moved my fish tank a few times and never had any loss of life.
Do move the fish and tank, I got a few fish boxes and large fish bags, the ones that shops receive fish from wholesalers in.
Empty half the tank like you would do for a normal water change.
Put a quarter of the water in 2 bags.
Catch all your fish and put them in one bag.
Put your filters and heaters in the other bag.
Fill up both bags with any remaining water in the tank.
Close up the bags and put them in the boxes.
Move your tank and boxes as quickly as possible.
Put the filters and heaters in first along with all the water
and then the fish along with all their water and fill the remaining tank with water from the local supply

hope that helps
darragh

hi mate

why dont you try using Organic Aqua read up bout it on the net or do a search on the forum there has been a few discussions about it i have used it once and i have a mate who swears by it you can buy it in ur lfs.

it really works its a really safe way to move fish with less stress as possible, and is just as easy to stop using it and go back to the way it was befor the move.

all you do is clean out ur filter in tap water set back up your tank fill it with fresh tap water and add the organic aqua and you can nearly add fish straight away.

its magic

best of luck mate,

stephen

Think we might avoid that whole discussion being dragged out on here again re Organic Aqua! Follow Darraghs advise and you wont go far wrong.

hi lads
wasn't sure what section to put this in so mods feel free to move as appropriate.
I am going to be moving in a month or so and wanted to be prepared to move my tank and fish. i was just wondering does anyone have any tips for this? i will more than likely be renting a van so space should not be a problem. i was thinking of using large 25 ltr bottles(if i can "borrow" some from work) to put the water in as its not going to be possible to lift 100 ltr tank with stones and fish included :)i do have a smaller tank as a qt but it wouldnt be very spacious (with 3d background fitted) for all of the fish. as you can understand i want this move to have as little stress as possible for the fish. i do have a cooler box i could use would this cause less stress as it will be dark? any suggestions/advice will be much appreciated.
thanks Al

This might help, how far are you transporting? Where is your nearest fish shop, they could provide the bags if needed.

thanks darragh. no house picked yet (missus has to decide) but moving in a month no matter what.it will be a short enough hop from portlaoise to naas area so about 30-35 min drive. will a lfs charge for those bags and boxes? would a cooler not do the same thing as it is insulated?

For a trip thats only that far,Id simply ask a lfs can they help by giving you a few bags,I mean the volume of water isnt that huge at all, most of the sponsors are decent, even if it was only to borrow the box for a bit. I know Seahorse aquariums helped me out before when I was driving 3 hours.(then again they are always good to deal with in my experience).

Are you around Swords at all. If not as said before sponsors usually have these with every shipment and may have a spare one or tow to pass on

ok, for both movers:
take at least 50% of the tank water with you, and keep filter media in a little water to stop bacteria dying
keep the fish in bags/buckets or whatever, but insulate them well
set up tanks in new house, put all water back in switch everything on and put fish in. top up with fresh water.
the next day do a small water change (the water is usually mucky when moving but dont worry about it they have been living in it for x months/years) and test water. all should be fine
i recenty moved a rake of fish from a 500l system to 2 84l tanks with no casualties. cory's even bred the next week. and i had to try to get 50+l of media into 4 small internal filters...

alan: i've many many buckets with tight fitting lids as you have seen, you can borrow them if you like. i can even give you a hand moving if its before work as i work in naas too and will be heading that way
