Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi there - anyone know anything about barilius? I bought seven last week (impulse buy) and they are clean mad. I've never seen fish that feed as quick they are like lightning! The store couldn't really tell me much about them except for the fact that they thought they would grow to about 6 inches. They were labelled as "Banded Barilius" - they're mostly silver with greenish flanks and darker green/blue blotched irregular thin vertical stripes (about nine) on each side. Their fins are starting to colour up slightly orange with white tips. I've kept fish for years but never came across these before. Sound like anything anyone has ever kept before? and if so would love some info. Cheers. Mark.

Hi Mark,
Think the post might be in the wrong place. (introduce yourself).
Anyhow the fish you mention sound like a type of danio. I think, not sure what specific name is but I suspect the Banded part is what shows on the supplier list alhtough the true origin could be difficult to find if the shop couldnt make them out more even. The Green barred danio maybe at a guess.
Would love to see a pic of them, they sound very interesting.
Gavin

barilius are lovely fish from asia and are usually called hill trouts as they live in fastflowing highground streams and have the appearance of trout. i think they require high oxygenated cooler water and are predatory but not aggressive. i kept some for a while a few years ago and they did'nt do too well as i was not aware of the required conditions at the time.
i hav'nt seen them for sale in ireland before and they were always difficult to source as they were reputed to be bad travellers. where did you buy yours. can you post a picture.
there are several similar species and most grow to about 5 or 6 inches.
30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

I think I saw some of these in Purrfect Pets on the longmile road during the last week.

yes barilius, but barilius canarensis aka the mackrel barb, has the patterns as you described and the orange tipped fins, black tail with white patches on. and they are the same ones in purrfect pets (not for long tho...)
