Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All.

I was hoping my first post would be more of a how are you all doing kind and introduce myself but unfortunately I have a bit of an emergency with some of my stock...

I've recently cycled a new 180l Juwel Vision tank, had the water tested and given the all clear to start to stock. I already had some Molly's a Siamese fighting fish and some tetras in my old tank so transferred them over without any issue and have gradually added community friendly stock (3 juvanile angles, head and tail lights, couple of gourmies (spelling) )

Last week, one of the Molly's took ill, his / her head got a bit swelled and it's body was kind of kinked if that makes sense? it died after 2 days.
Yesterday I noticed that my fighting fishes tail fin had kind of curled up into a tube shape but he was moving around normally so I added some fin rot additive to the tank. Before leaving for work this morning, he was sitting down at the bottom of the tank hidden away, he sometimes does this and I know it's part of their make up that the do it so I thought nothing of it. I just got home and he was in the same place, but alive. He moved out swam for a couple of minutes but settled at the bottom of the tank again in a different spot and generally looks sorry for himself.

Also (as it if could get any worse) one of the OTHER mollies is now lying on it's side at the bottom of the tank. He is still alive and breathing but there's no life there.

PLEASE HELP!

recap:

1. A mollies head swelled, body twisted and died a couple of days later
2. Siamese Fighting Fish's tail fin is curled into a tube shape and he's sitting (right way up) at the bottom of the tank and doesn't look healthy.
3. Another molly is now on it's side, breathing but lifeless

I hope someone can help!

Thanks in advance
Denver

Water Change now! Not too much 25% to start with. If you have an air pump get it going. Don't stress the fish out with meds at this time as it will make things worse, you MUST check water regularly as in a new setup, cycled or otherwise can get huge spikes in Nitrates and to me that's what it looks like.

I agree with Kev,
But as a supplement - do you have the filter still running in your old tank?
If so move it into your new tank and run the two together for a while (until things improve, at the very least) as the established filter will help.

John

ps,
Welcome to the Forum, hopefully you'll soon have this under control and then can start adding more pleasant posts

I change 20% once a week, was only done on Saturday morning.
I did a water test before posting (PH, No2, No3, KH and GH and all parameters were perfect. I don't have an ammonia test but based on water change just done saturday I would have thought it was good?

In my opinion, the cause is in the Water, as John says, if you have the old media or can get some from someone, use it. You don't say where you are, someone might be near you that could give you a bag of Bacteria laden Water.

Love your name by the way.

Kev.

Thanks Lads appreciate the help!

I didn't mention in the hurry to get it posted that the tank was 2nd hand.
It was in use up to an hour before I picked up. got it with coral sand and external filter. I deliberately didn't wash the sand or the filter out to give the cycle process a bit of a kick-start.

I also "washed" the old tanks media in the new tanks water and squeezed the cotton from a plant I had in it into the new water at the start of the cycle.

I'd be afraid to put anything from the old tank into the new one now as it has been decommissioned for about 2 weeks now. I still have the filter running on it but I'd be afraid the nitrate to nitrite process has been stopped because of the lack of stock?

If you think it's worth doing another 20 / 25% water change I'll do it right now. I have the air pump running flat out now (thanks for that)

As for the name, thanks :) It's.... different I guess... exactly what my parents wanted when then christened me lol

Cheers

Back home and have added the water you've kindly given me with some safe start.

Kev thanks a mill for taking the time to siphon some off and meet me. I really appreciate it and I owe you!

Will keep you posted on what happens next. Fingers crossed the Fighting fish comes good. I think the molly is too far gone but equally, fingers crossed he comes 'round!

Buying livebearer fish is a 'hit and miss job' in my opinion. The standard out there is atrocious at the moment.

Hi Guys

Thought I'd give a quick update as to state of play.
Unfortunately, both the Molly and the Fighting fish died last night. I was obviously too late getting the matured water from Kev.

I'm gutted, the fighting fish was my favourite out of all the stock I have. Mad little bugger.

Thanks again to Kev for helping out so much!

Sorry that these fish died Denver,
I'm still feeling uneasy in that it was the already-established fish which were affected, rather than the newcomers.
This really does suggest that there was some sort of lack of equality in the water parameters between the old and new tanks?
Hopefully Kev's 'donation' will help stabilise things and you'll have no further losses.

Also would suggest you get an Ammonia test kit, certainly would of helped in this case also.
Keep the testings up as all may not be fixed just yet but hopefully it is sorted now. Fair play to Kev also for the helping hand.

Oh and welcome to the forum, some pics now next please!!

I'm hoping that this is all it is guys. I fear I may have stocked too quickly, granted there was about a 2 week gap between introducing existing stock into the tank then adding new stock which I thought was ample.

I'm going to leave adding anything for at least another month in the hope that the water quality will hit an equilibrium.

An ammonia kit is on my shopping list for later today for sure.

As for Kev, total gent. Cant thank him enough.

Yep will post some pics tonight of the tank as it was last week when all was well.

Cheers guys!
