Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My aqua one tank is ready to be stocked. Its planted and some nice bog wood aswell with white sand. I'm looking for ideas for it. I have an aquatec plasma tank with neons, danios and some dwarf gourami couple o cory and a pleco.

The tank is big 260l. Im thinking of just goin big shoals of above, any different ideas would be cool.

Cheers John

wat do you think of the khuli loach, i think a big shoal of them would be great

rummynose tetras are a fine addition to a planted tank, aswell as cardinal tetras

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

Khuli Loach are quality fish and once they get confident in the enviroment can show some great characteristics

You could get some Rams they are a nice fish
Big Shoal of Harlequin would look fab
Threadfin Rainbow would be another good choice

John, not to have a pop at you as it is you tank your rules, i love the white sand look myself, but i had white sand and changed it over to a dark gravel and the difference in the colouration of the fish was outstanding. just something to ponder over, maybe in the future.

Ideally look at the three areas of the tank ie.bottom, middle and top. Work your stocking around that, so you get good coverage all over the tank.
There are too many fish to name out, it depends what kind of tank you want,do you want an impressive shoaling fish,do you want a fish that would breed in a community setting,do you want a specific theme such a South American etc..
There are too many choices to mention but with community fish as long as you keep them similar size (so they dont eat each other!) you will have alot of fish to choose from.

When People talk about shoals or Schools of Fish they usually pop for Cardinals, Rummies etc but rarely suggested are Cories, And I'm talking about Pygmy corys, I have 18 and if they aren't swimming around in a tight shoal they are hovering on flat leaved Plants or best is when they stop swimming altogether and rest on the leaf, it looks amazing, originally I had 10 in a heavily planted set-up and recently noticed 18 so they must have bred.

If you want to make the Tank appear bigger, you could use Nano Fish like micro Rasboras etc, you will have more individual fish with a smaller Biological load, it would really look cool.

Kev, I love pygme corries but was told they were not suitable for planted tank as they dig... I would like to have them when I set up my tank in June. What's your opinion on it?

What about rainbow fish for schools fish in a tank?

Pygmys are way too small to disturb plants unless they were very small like small plantlets yoy had detached from a mother Plant like tenellus swords etc, I really don't believe they could disturb anything, mine don't , they are tiny Fish just make sure that they are larger than any mouth they share the tank with because if one is eaten, both will die.

For shoaling Rainbows, try these.

Kev,
I don't like big fish very much. Even my red phantom tetras are too big for me :) Maybe I will add some micro rasboras or amandae when I move into new place. So, I hope any of pygme corries won't be in danger.

Amandae are very special little things, they hug tight from time to time and are, in my experience, really hardy little Fish. Chili Rasboras will school very well as will the under used but cracking Gold Tetras, cheap and cheerful.

My tank is tipping along nicely, picked cherry barbs, tiger barbs and some algae eaters.
What sort of fish would stay middle to top and mix ok with their tank mates.

Cheers

you say algae eaters....are they SAE?
Also tigers arent very community friendly to be honest. How many of them have you. They will nip alot unless u have enough of them to keep themselves busy.
