Is it possible to cross breed panda corry and steb
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

While I was buying my panda corries I was assured by the seller that they wouldn't cross with my sterbai corries. Currently I am not so sure if he was right. Just have a look if the corry-baby that was born in my tank is full or cross breed one. My panda-boy was always very close to a bigger sterbai-girl but I thought their fascination was fuitless up to now.

hi katherine, it is possible for these corydoras species to crossbreed and the picture certainly would confirm this as the young fish looks a perfect mix of panda and sterbai.

I am broken down

(

( Corry-baby is cute but as John_H I am against crossbreeding fish. Where is the seller's responsibility? (and it was one of our listed places...)

Moreover, I introduced pygmy corrys last week!
What's your advise in this respect? Should I think about re-homing sterbai? Will panda have a chance to crossbreed with pygmy?

I love my pandas and pygmys are georgeous and would love to keep them both but...

By all accounts if you have a large enough group of any type of cory, for example 4 males and 2 females of each, the likelihood of this happening would be extremely rare. I'm not sure what numbers of each you have at present but if you could get the above ratios in your tank that would help a lot.

DJK, unfortunatly I have just 2 of each and it seems that sterbai is the only girl among them. I am not able to distinguish sex of my corrys. I was thinking about leaving only pandas and pygmys in my tank as I am going to change my gravel for substrate and I am affraid of sterbai digging out in it and destroying my plants. I will increase the number of pandas and pygmys but I need more time for that.

Katherine,
I think that you would be better off trying to exchange the Sterbai for more Pandas - or vice-versa.
Since Pygmaeus are much smaller and are mid-water dwellers I think you would be safe from further interbreeding - but having said that, until I saw your little lad and read Derek's reply, I would have dismissed the thought that Sterbai and Pandas could ever interbreed.
As stated, if you have larger groups of Corys that would diminish the chance of further cross-breeding too.
