Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All

I was thinking of getting one of these guys for my new tank. Has anyone got any advice about keeping them?

I have some questions as well.

Will one be okay to keep in a 190-litre tank?

Would they mix with Angel Fish & Corys?

Would they feed on flakes or would I have to get a different tyre of food for them?

Thanks :)

Hey barr black ghost knife fish can grow to be pretty and if kept healthy will out grow your tank. they get to be 12 to 16 inch fully grown. From what i no they ok wit angels and corys and a lot of others only one bgk pair tank. the love a lot of hiding places and are nocturnal so u wont see much of him with the lights on. They eat a lot of different things sinking pellets are good and blood worms and shrimp and also could feed on your flakes if there is some left over. one more thing id keep a close eye on your corys as im a big beliver of if the fish can feet another fish in his mouth he will eat it. just something to keep in mind. hope some of this helped...

I was only planning on getting one - even if they do grow quite large I would have hoped a good filtered tank should accommodate him happily.

Would their size be restricted by the size of the tank ?(or is this a myth)

People think diff things about this. it wont grow to its full size if the tank is to small and will die befor it should. you could get one and if it starts to out grow your tank sell it on or see if someone can find a home for it

They are an exceptional Fish but don't impose the size of the Aquarium on the Fish, always get a Tank bigger than it would need, they are used in some countries to assess the quality of treated water for Human consumption. They get tame and will eat from your hand. If my memory serves me , they are very sensitive to medications in the Tank due to being scaleless.

I've been doing a bit of reading and the general advice is to get a pipe of some type so he'll feel safe.

People seem to talk about using a clear pipe where he can still be seen.

Could anyone advise where I would get one of these?

Suppose it would do the job allrite but I’d prefer something a bit more substantial.

I’d also be afraid the cut edges may not suit the fish either.

As the lads said, these fish can get very long. I got one about a year ago at 3-4", he's now coming up to 10"ish. Great to see them hang upside down and swim backwards around the tank. Really odd fish. Do be wary about the size of tankmates, as they have deceptively large mouths. In saying that, mine prefers veg- the cucumber I put in for the plecos is hoovered up by the Knife!
Give him plenty of hiding places and he will be out much more often and will adapt to coming out in mornings and evenings, even with the lights on.
Good luck with him, I'm sure he'll become a real pet.
