Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,
Would anyone know what the best additive is for my tank to keep the green algae at bay?
Also does keeping the light on all the time help to keep the algae from reproducing?
I'm a novice as you've probably gathered from my question (hopefully I've posted in the correct category this time?).
Matt.

Matt,
Growth of Algae is natural in an aquarium and cannot be completely eliminated.
Things to do..
Make sure the tank is not getting direct sunlight.
Put a timer on your tank lights. You only need the lights on for approx 8 to 10 hours a day any longer will encourage more algae growth.
Do not over feed your fish.
When doing water changes use a small sponge to clear any algae from the inside of the glass.
If your layout allows you should also remove any bogwood and stones occasionally and give them a scrub down to remove algae traces. This also gives you the opportunity to changes the layout of the tank.
Purchase some fish that consume some of the algae but do not depend on them to remove all algae in the tank.
Do regular water changes at least 25% per week or every second week.
No doubt others members will have loads of further advise.
Post some pictures of your tank .
Greg

My Sister's Dog's name is Twitter :o)
Do as Greg says, overfeeding causes lots of Phosphates and encourages Algae.
Use some young Bristlenoses and keep up with the Water-changes, if you think of Rivers and Lakes, the Light is on from early Dawn until late evening, a lot of time and a heck of a lot stronger than T5 Bulbs but you don't see these full of Algae, only when something goes wrong like Effluent or Sewage is spilled or dumped into a Watercourse, Excessive use of Fertilisers on Golf Courses etc

Kev,
That's a good name for a Dog (Twitter). Mine's named Ruby as we got her on a Tuesday.
Thanks for the advice, I'm hooked on the Fish (no pun intended).
Cheers,
Matt.

currently just running a tank with no stock in it , just some rock base stones and water .. However I see a kind of film / slime on the front of the tank just beginning . It doesnt look like algae to me , is it the start of a build up ? The tank is not in the sun and has no food going into it ..
